Canon 5D MKIII or Nikon D800

Coming from a 400D to a 5D3 I was expecting a wow factor with portraits/landscapes.

I Just can't seem to get tac sharp focus and at 1/60th sec on a 24-70 is just silly soft.

And using a D3S for a day a few months back and it was stupid sharp.

What focal length did you shoot at 1/60?
What were you shooting at 1/60?
Was it hand held?
Has the lens been micro adjusted?

With the Nikon, what were you shooting, under what condition and with what lens?

Wayyyyyy too many variable to say the 5D3 isn't sharp with 1 lens in 1 shutter speed.

What's is the wow factor you were looking for?

24mm focal length
People standing still
Hand held
Micro Adjusted, nope not touched it.

Nikon Same situation just swapped camera's with a friend to see the difference/feel with a 24-70 too

wow factor, I was hoping for was just a dramatic change (ofc 9fps etc) and stupidly fast at 2.8 was for sure the biggest thing compared to my old 400D. I've still a lot to learn I don't get out enough or use it as much as I could to be blown away tbh

There could be so many things.

The micro adjustment could be off.
The lens could be a bad copy.
User error.

As for 2.8 being a wow factor, I say the wow factor in aperture really comes in under f/2.0.

I do own 50mm 1.8 + 85mm 1.8 but since moving to the 24-70 2.8 not touched em.

No idea to tell if the lens is a bad copy or the micro adjustment - Might look at this over the weekend but looking at the focus gizmo's.

You could always look up the dot tune method, at least I think that is what it is called.

Test it by using it in the real world?

Up that is what MP4 did and got the soft results.

Besides too many variables in the real world to be able to be sure micro adjustment was the cause. Some systematic testing is required with a consistent setup.

Test, as in use it for real.

I think you got it mixed up.

You do the micro adjust in a controlled environment, but eventually you need to leave that room and do it outside and shoot real stuff to test what you have just done.

OK, that makes sense and I totally agree that after tuning the microadjustment in a controlled environment you need real world testing.

It's also very possible that it's just he was expecting more from the crops. The 5D3 pixels are more or less the same size as the 400D so he might be comparing 100% crops which is hardly comparing like for like. Particularly when he says the D3S was so sharp (which has huge pixels compared to the both of them i.e. much less taxing on lens performance) that could well be the issue?

My 24-70 is my least used lens, after the 70-200 2.8.

Funny you should mention this. When my solicitor pulls her finger out and sorts my mortgage, I'm getting those two lenses for my 5Dmk3. Or was. I'm starting to have serious misgivings about them. While they are no doubt great lenses, I massively prefer the look of the prime lens. So much so, I'm thinking of getting a 135L and replacing my 35L with the Sigma 35. That would leave me with a large chunk of cash for a transmitter for the flash and a x2 t/c for my moon shots :D

I don't use the 135L that much either....I rather move forward with the 85 if I can.

It's definitely my most used lens too. That, then the 35L. In fact, they're the only two lenses I carry around with me. I was just wanting a walk around lens, but I'm really not sure if I'll use them. I use the 70-200F4 about twice a year, and that's during summer so light isn't a problem. Just that when I was at a recent gig, I was wishing I had something so I didn't have to switch lenses all the time. I suppose I could buy another 5dmk3 and have the 35L on one and 85L on the other. That would still be about £800 cheaper :D

I want something awesome to replace my Sigma 12-24. It annoys me that I have to stop it down to make it sharp. Maybe I'll wait to see if Canon do release their version of the 14-24 that Nikon fans love (and some Canon users with adapters I've seen!).
