I've had my 350D for about 7 years now and it has served well but I have a real urge to move on a notch, mainly for potential image quality and the greater capibility to crop that higher MPs gives.
Also, AF improvements in fast tracking?

What are the major differences between the 600D and 60D apart from ergonomic improvements?
There is about a £250 price difference and not sure if I could justify it.

My two main lenses are Canon 17-40mm F4l and Canon 100-400mm F5.6l
I do a mixture of static stuff, airshows and wildlife, as a rule all outside.

I have never had an issue with the smaller size of the 350D either.

Thanks
Andrew

I think the main differences are just the build quality and ergonomics. Improvement in the burst rate as well I think. Not enough to justify a £250 difference imo.

Could look at the second hand 60D market due to the new 60Da model being out now?

the 60Da won't have any effect on the pricing of 60d it will have effect on the 20da. why because the 60da is aim at astrophotography only to use it for normal photography you would have to buy a IR filter to go on the end of the lens. as the standard IR filter that all camera have on in front of the camera chip (CDD,CMOS etc) is not present on the Da serise cameras as this filters is required to be remove for astrophotography use, as having said filter on can impact it use in astrophotography.

Thanks, I didn't know that. I thought it was a replacement to it!

I have exactly the same dilema. But also not sure whether to wait for the impending 650D/70D replacements to see what additions they bring. With Nikon releasing their D3200 the other day I'm hoping Canon won't be too far behind with their updates either...

Worse case scenario is that the price of the 600D/60D may fall as a result while resellers try to clear stock...

While there are other differences the main one between the 600 and the 60 is the handling - go to a shop and try them out, see which you prefer. The 60 was definitely worth the extra cash for me over the 600, but the 7D wasn't worth the extra over the 60.

To me, the difference in handling and ergonomics is everything, yes the insane FPS on my 40D is smashing but combined with a big boys lens it will no longer feel like a toy.

Going XXX>XX can feel like a sidegrade but don't let that stop you. If you can afford L lenses, you can afford a lovely 60D =]

I'm actually considering going XX>XXX. I have a 30D at the moment and since they've scrapped the magnesium alloy body from mine on the 60D (instead trying to force me to get the 7D if I want that feature), I see little reason to get the 60D over the 600D. The speed of the AF and FPS for faster shots doesn't really interest me since it's rare I take shots like that. And from what I can tell - that's the only difference (apart from physical size).

Either way - it's a step up from my ageing 30D.

they've scrapped the magnesium alloy body

WHAT!

Ah man that just sounds weird, and as you say a tad rip off-ish. As all your paying for is cross type AF and a marginally faster FPS, don't think the gain is as rapid as 400>40D is :P

Semi-pro body. Made of plastic.... With my 1kg L lens... Weird

(totally sounds like their pressuring you into the 7D)

Thanks for all the comments.
I will go and have a look at both but just wanted some idea of the other differences before I fall for the 60D. I am so used to the smaller format size of the xxxD now I might find it too big and I don't want to find I like the 60d too much!
The £250 saved can be put towards another L lens. Lol
I've spent money on the glass over the years rather than upgrade the body as you have noticed.

Unsure about used as just never 100% what you will end up with. I would actually prefer to get new and maybe slightly compromise on the model. I could afford either if I REALLY feel the extra is worth it.

I also want another lens though to go inbetween my two main ones. I currently have a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 but I have never been happy with the images, especially at the longer end. Wondering about thr Canon 24-70 f4 or 24-105?

I've had a 300D, 30D and now have the 60D. The 60D feels MUCH cheaper than the 30D. I really liked how the 30D with a batter grip felt, and balanced in my hands. The 60D is okay with grip, but seems lacking in that department. It's a very decent camera, and I'd suggest getting it if only for the value of menu systems, etc over the 600D. Once you get used to the menus, which is extremely quickly, you won't want to go back. Well, I didn't.

I've just given my sister the 30D and my old nifty fifty. Annoyingly she seems to get better photos with it than I did :D

Any ideas of likely release dates and specs yet?

Well my decision is made. I've just ordered a Canon Manufacturer Refurb EOS 600D and kit lens from their ebay outlet for £440! 12 month Canon Warranty and feedback from previous deals is very good. The money I've saved can go towards some better glass :)

If anyone else wants a look don't hang around - these usually sell fast!

Hmmm, tempting!
Wonder if you can get the cashback, no argument as to official dealer:D

Unfortunately not since they aren't being sold as new. But still work out around £100 cheaper than a new one even after the £50 cashback!

The 600D is best bang for buck atm in Canons line though I think many would have paid the extra for the 60D if it was a genuine successor to the 50D ie micro adjustment/faster fps/alloy body etc The better AF and menu/top screen are certainly nice but they put it in no man's land for many people. Its a nicer camera and I personally would prefer it to the 600D but when money is tight I know which one I would be happier buying.

Canon's problem is what do they do with the 650D? They can't improve on the 600D too much as they would encroach on the 60D. I would be surprised if a 650D turns up any earlier than Q4 this year.

Well based on previous release schedules I expect a 70D to follow hot on the heels of the 650D. Their release dates have been pretty consistent and regimented in the past with the xxxD normally a spring release annually, followed by the xxD later in the summer but with a longer 2 year cycle.

By previous release dates, the 650D is overdue by almost 2 months, and the 70D is due August/September this year...
