Canon 6D announced...

I mentioned the 5D MII for exactly the reason you mentioned, its going to be discontinued and discounted - that is going to leave a gap between the 7D and the 5DMKIII.

The 6D is going to have to take up the entry level full frame position and it isn't a £1799 body - the £1400 price is about what it should be. Sure the big retailers such as WEX, Jessops etc will price gouge the general public, but I really do believe that the retailer who offer big discounts at the moment will be selling it around £1400. I also happen to believe that the big retailers will have to follow suit.

As for a 3D with a high megapixel count coming in at £3000 - they could do it, since Nikon have done it and charged less. It would however take a sea change at Canon - at the present moment their prices for the higher end cameras are extortionate - I suspect the execs at Nikon are laughing their socks off.

Yes the smaller retailers will be the first to move on price, but they still aren't going to be dropping it by £400 within a few weeks of its release.

The 3D won't come in at £2999 because of the fact that it is likely to be considered a higher-spec camera than the 5D mkiii, or at least because of the megapixels. As the 5D mkiii came in at £2999, they will make it more expensive than that. It doesn't really matter what Nikon's prices are, because Canon has made it quite clear recently that they don't care and set the prices the way they want.

Don't really think this is important seeing as you can use your phone or ipad instead?

The option of tethered shooting and the lack of a swivel screen on a camera that should already have one is not the same. Messing on with tethered shooting out in the middle of no-where on a camera that is meant to be a lightweight entry FF just makes no sense.

And just to re-iterate you get swivel touch screens on canons £400 rebel offerering.

This 'budget' FF is £1800 on WEX photography while a Nikon D800 is £2044. The 6D has far to many things lacking at that price point and although the price will come down I think its high starting point will be a problem for some time.

The 5DMKIII is way over priced at £3K, even the current £2400 is at least £500-600 too much relative to nikon. but as you say, canon dont care what Nikon prices their cameras at.

Thats not a bad price.

It's a damn good price when you look at the quality of what you are getting!

For once I actually quite like Kai's review he talks a lot of sense about the percieved weaknesses of the camera and isn't quite as annoying as usual!

The price is good and I would have bought it this generation around except for the single cross point. I would have out up with 11 points but not with one single cross point. Looking through my lightroom cat I could have put up with 1/4000.

I really like the smart phone teathering so I imagine this will be in the 7D replacement.

Apart from the Wi-Fi tethering and being FF camera there are things that really stick out for me in the ergonomics department such as size of the body, removal of the joystick, repositioning of the menu buttons on the back, no flash, single sd slot and tiny depth of field button.

Read couple of user impression of the camera on dpreview and it seems the shutter button mechanism is not like the ones found in 5D/7D but more like 20D/30D/40D/60D, which is more prone to grease/dust and becoming unresponsive because of its shoddy build quality.

Lets just hope Canon continue to produce 5D Mark II and lower the price even more.

They won't.

Tbh, I find this a very uninteresting camera, even less interesting than the D600. If all you need is a FF sensor, then it does the job. Most of us however don't judge a camera by the sensor alone.

Ummm...

The 6D walks all over the D600 for ISO performance, the wifi features look good for studio work, the button layout is much more useful because you don't need to take your left hand away from the lens and video is better on the 6D.

Yes there are weaknesses in the 6D, a lot of them, AF being the biggest one, but it does fill a role far more than the D600 is just a D7000+FF sensor-a few gimped features.

Any source for these ISO comparisons, are you talking about Raw vs Raw or Jpg smudgery?

I'll wait for DXO, but from what I can tell grain and colour blotching is about the same as the D600 (when normalised), but the D600 is sharper and retains fine detail a bit better at high ISO's.

Just had a play with this in airport tax free and it had a 24-105 attached. The body is a dissapointment compared to my 50d ergonomics and quick joy stick etc but the AF is much better than I thought it would be. Sadly I couldn't put my card in to show the shots I took as I'm compact flash but the outer AF points where very very good at locking even moving targets. I also tested them on real low contrast blacks and it locked at all ranges perfectly.

Although I then tried the 5D3 and it had next to no battery left but it felt like it was made for my hand. A thing of beauty.
