Cant balance out monthly shops - thinking of trying a butchers for the meat.

So many people wrongly believe that a butcher = better quality. It just isn't a rule. Bad butchers are a dime a dozen, so you have to be careful.

Supermarket is definitely cheaper than my local butchers and all of the online butchers I have checked. A lot of the online butchers have a comparison saying they're cheaper than the supermarkets but the prices are wrong when i go and check. They had chicken breasts at double the actual supermarket price per KG. I bet most people just believe it and don't check themselves.

I did get some packs of minced beef from donald russell as it was on special offer and worked out a bit cheaper than Tesco a few weeks ago. i'll be honest though, I cant tell much difference between this mince and the Tesco lean steak mince I usually buy.

Really? I made burgers with it the other day (and have done so with both Sains and Tesco comparatively priced mince), and there was a huge difference.

The normal supermarket stuff didn't really have much flavour and needed loads of seasoning, whereas the DR stuff actually tasted like nicely matured steak, just minced.

grow your own veg and buy your meat from butchers job done

half of your budget is more than enough for even very good meat.

if you go in your butchers regular they'll see you a valued customer and do you better deals ;)

This looks like a good offer if your not already registered on Westin Gourmet http://www.westingourmet.co.uk/onetimeoffer/

I just ran this list of meat through Asda for comparison. Not the smart price stuff, Asda "extra special". That came out at £35.83. So the supermarket's regular price is a chunk cheaper than the deal, and well under half of that online butcher's regular price.

Of course you can say that the online butchers are better quality, and that may be so. But then say you're buying for the quality, they never seem to be comparable on price at all.

You pay for quality and consistency in a butcher, it's well worth it compared to supermarket trash. They buy their meat to look good, butchers source their meat based on it's quality and usually it'll be local stuff.

If you want to spend less stop wasting food, stretch it out. It is remarkable how much food people waste - not an accusation, a fact, people don't think about it.

I can make a chicken do lunch and dinner for 3 days and make a batch of stock to freeze from it using peelings and whatever I have laying around. That stock makes a perfectly good cream of chicken soup if need be, or can be used in cooking and all sorts.
Boiled up a ham? Don't bin the water, make it into soup with some peas and standard ingredients. One of the cheapest meals you'll ever have!

I grow a few tomatos although if I had a garden I'd probably have a veg patch - great way to save money and you don't realise how much flavour is lost from veg by the time they reach the shops.
Eat a carrot just after pulling it out of the ground, it's intensely sweet, a completely different breed to supermarket carrots.

Trim fat from the budget in other ways as well buy your veg seasonally, any good greengrocers will be able to tell you whats cheap, same with fishmongers. You can get serious bargains.
Or you can get veg boxes, direct from farms now, seasonal and they're often cheaper than supermarkets. Nice muddy carrots and potatos and that, great stuff.

Try westin gourmet, We order 20KG and i eat 2 pieces every day and lasts well over a month.

Works out cheaper than all the supermarkets per kg also. Check the reviews the chicken tastes amazing.

I've just ordered 20KG chicken breasts from here. Thanks! It actually worked out as £94 because they currently have 20% off 10kg packs and as a first time customer I get a further 10% (use the code - intro2664).

£4.60/kg for what is supposedly really good meat - couldn't give it a miss! Now to see if it'll fit in the freezer. If not, it'll have to go to my gf's parent's house for storage.

bought some chicken in tesco the other day (willow farm) for £14/kg. Madness!

I didn't say it was the cheapest, I've never ordered from there but the reviews say the meat is quality so I'm sure the £4 extra will be worth it :D I wouldn't pay the pull price though.

So i went to the local butchers. Told him it was my first time and he guided me through it like the first time at a Brownies meeting...

Bought a boat load of stuff including 2 mahoosive steaks all for £40ish.

Thanks for the advice guys, the food looks so much better before eating.

Just placed my first order with Westin, £194 worth of chicken, sausages and burgers!

Blumin' 'ell! They must breed monster sized chickens if the breasts are 20kg!

I get through loads of chicken each week and buy it from the butchers, I get about twice as much meat as I would buying it in the supermarket for a similar price! :)

get your chicken from westingourmet much cheaper than supermarkets/butchers 5kg of chicken breasts is around £28 and their all 250g atleast with no added water so they stay exactly the same size as they are raw.

Just wrap a couple of breasts in plastic sandwhich bags and freeze and defrost the day before.
