Hi,

Firstly I have been driving a dturbo 306 since learning to drive, now im 21 (22 this year) I want something fun ;)

I am uni student on my sandwhich placement so money this year is no problem at all. However, next year will be pretty tough on the old cash, but not too bad when i go back to uni for my final year ;)

Now, 106 gti or 306 gti-6?

I have driven & been passenger in both cars but I cant decide for the life of me what to buy. Factors to consider...

I will have £3 - 4k to spend on a car.
Both can be insured for roughly the same, 106 a little cheaper
Tax cheaper on 106? (thinking of outcomes next year)
I do on average 100 miles a week with this placement job and next year I will be doing 30 - 40 miles a week on average when back in uni. I know the 306 is quite thirsty, will the 106 improve a little being light? (Again thinking of next year really) Most will be motorway miles as g/f lives in Preston.
More car for your money with the 306, leather aircon etc.

Both cars I know will put a smile on my face, just need help on my decision.

Thanks

Simple choice, if you've got bigger than size 5 feet don't get a 106, there's no space in the footwell. I had one as a courtesy car once and almost wrapped it round a lampost because I got my feet tangled round the pedals.

That would be a problem for all of 30 mins I think, I soon got used to the one I drove and the same with my brothers old saxo. I have size 10 - 11 feet :)

Yet I manage to drive a Saxo with an identical footwell with size 12 feet with absolutely no trouble at all. :p

A £3-4k 106 GTI should be a 1998 model or newer, therefore you get half leather /alcantara same with the 306. I don't think tax will be any cheaper as before 2001 cars were taxed in two brackets (under 1549cc, and over). Not quite sure what emissions bracket the 2001 GTI falls under, but I think it may be the top bracket anyway. The 106 will not be too bad on fuel, but the close ratio box on it means its sat about 4k rpm at 70mph :(

To be honest if it was my choice I would go with the 306 if you can find a decent example for the price and don't mind quite a thirsty car.

Again like GT3 says, I have size 11 feet and manage ok in my car (99 106GTi). I personally think its pretty poor on the petrol though, even on the motorway. Ive got a 106GTi myself, but i'd probably take the 306 if I was in your situation.

I was in your situation, I bought the 306 GTi6 :)

I only do about 40miles a week round down, the fuel's awful but it is nice and comfy when I'm communiting in the morning :D

Plus when I want to have some fun it happily obliges :D

Motorway miles in them are effortless, feels very stable at high speeds. Performance wise up to 60mph they're similar then after that the 306 should pull away a bit. The 106 is a cracking car, but I just wanted something a little more comfortable. It's a great all round car :)

I'd probably go with the GTI-6 if running costs aren't an issue, mainly because it's quicker. I test drove a VTS and whilst the performance wasn't bad, it wasn't as quick as I would have liked. With the 106 GTi having the same performance I'd imagine that would be the same.

Having said that if you do decide to go for the 106, I'd suggest looking at the Saxo VTS. Pug 106 GTI's seem to be awfully overpriced for what they are, wheras you can blag some bargain VTS'. £4k would almost certainly get you a 2002 VTS, wheras you would only get a 1999 ish GTI.

Xsara VTS.

It's like a 306 GTi-6 only it doesnt cost stupid money.

I know you wouldnt like me saying this, but...I really dislike the looks of the xsara. I am more than happy to pay a premium for the 306 for the better looks. After all I dress like a poser ;)

meh, just screw mod the dturbo, waaaaaay faster than the gti6 ;)

its already done, I just need to see clearly out my rear view mirror ;) Dont mind the step in performance down to a gti ;)

if you dress like a poser, why do you want a 306? lol. the 306 gti-6 is so stupidly over priced that i couldnt recommend it to anybody over the xsara.

lol. i couldnt give a damn and FYI, i drive a 306 so you'd better try something better than that to offend me.

what part of "the xsara is far cheaper and better" dont you understand? everybody's entitled to their opinions but when you say its an affordable hatch? nope. I'm not saying get the xsara, but i would never buy the seriously overpriced 306 gti-6.

and since your the only person whos said anything other than "wow" i'd be inclined to ignore your ramblings and stay on topic ;)
