Cant decide - 106 or 306.

Simple choice, if you've got bigger than size 5 feet don't get a 106, there's no space in the footwell. I had one as a courtesy car once and almost wrapped it round a lampost because I got my feet tangled round the pedals.

I'm 6'2" and had no problem whatsover in my 106. In fact it was a really comfortable place to be. I'm always considering selling the Yaris and replacing it with another GTi.

The main thing to check is that the engine idles ok. There was a common fault which gave lumpy idleing..mine used to stall when slowing down at traffic lights for example. The problem can be caused by several different sensors and it can take several trips to a garage before you manage to locate and fix the cause of the problem.

The alarm sensors are prone to failure and your car alarm may start going off randomly. You can turn the sensors off with a button but you're better off getting them replaced.

Theres also the airbag warning light fault which thankfully is usually just a plug under the drivers seat which has come loose.

I believe the GTi-6 also shares the last two faults.

Other than that they're great cars which react well to simple modding. They handle like a gokarts and the induction noise from a foam filter is addictive :)

My 2p :)

But the Xsara doesn't have 6 gears, and usually I'd agree about the Xsara/306 thing when its a ropey old M reg 306, but a nice phase 2/3 GTI-6? Wouldn't choose a Xsara over one tbh.

This used to happen with mine, I never done a thing with it and it seems to have almost cleared over the 2 years ive had the car. I cant remember the last time it stalled on the move, and only very occasionally it might at idle, but thats only maybe happend once or twice in the last year.

Yeah, this occasionally happens, maybe 4 times in 2 years.

I was doing the Xsara a favour by posting a pic of a Mk1. Here is a picture of the stunning mk2 you can get for your money then :p

What an utterly hideous looking car.

Also for £4k, a GTI-6 will look like the one I posted above except perhaps without crystal clear lights. Any GTI-6 from about R reg will look like the one above, its only the lower models such as the dturbo that had the horrid D shaped fogs etc. He will not be looking at a Phase 1 for £3-4k :)

Never said I would either, but I wouldn't choose a pig ugly mk2 xsara over one and the mk1 is half is budget so I'm guessing he'd not go for one!

And as I said, that P reg GTI-6 is the same as the one I posted above just without the phase-3 headlights. Not a bad looking car if you ask me.

Xsara VTS and GTI-6 share the same engine, but the GTI-6 is a totally different league.

Keep telling yourself that - they are the same bar the gearbox and certain suspension settings if you give the fanboys the benefit of the doubt ;)

It's WAY more than just the engine.

the xsaras are grim compared to the 306 and yes i would rather have the first one you posted fox than the same price xsara.

Yea but you have an E36 :p

but even you have found e36's that you appreciate :p
i found a nice e39 last night, was only a 525i SE with sport kit in silver, was cheap!

Oh for **** sake same old same old. The guys said that he DOES NOT want a Xsara so can we forget about it? Believe it or not but people do just HATE the way it looks, get over it. Everytime someone say's they want a 306 they get lynched! Fair enough suggest it but he said straight away he does not want one, he has looked at them but still doesn't want one.

So it handles better, looks better and drives better. Yet you still reccomend the Xsara :p

But I do agree to a certain extent, you'd have to be blind want a phase 1 306 over any Xsara ;)

Don't bait him, this will just end up going completely off-topic, it's about the 106 gti vs. the 306 gti6 :/

It is however fair to give recomendations on equivalent cars he may not have considered. Hence me suggesting the identical Saxo VTS instead of a 106 GTI. But fair enough, if he has discounted the Xsara for the way it looks compared to a nice GTI-6 then we should let it rest ;)

Thinking about it the only reason you would choose the 106 over the 306 is inital cost (not much in it), insurance cost (already stated not a problem) or economy (both aren't great - 106 having the slight edge). The 306 will be faster, a better cruiser, more comfortable, just as fun/capable on the twisties and be loaded with more toys than the 106.

Saxo VTS?

They are HORRIFIC looking cars, SERIOUSLY UGLY, how can ANYONE want one?

He should spend £300000 more on a 106 GTi, as its STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL!
