I'm soon to purchase one or the other. Primarily as an Xmas gift for the kids ;)

Problem is that I just can't decide which one to go for. Tempted by the 360 for the price but I'm a bit of a Sony fan at heart. Is the difference in price for the PS3 justified?

well, im not sure anymore. if you want a bluray slash games console then yes. if you want a games console then no.

and besides that, a 360 and a bluray player can be picked up for not much more than the price of a ps3. I honestly think that would be the better route now. there was a time when the ps3 was worth the price for its bluray capabilites alone, but not any more when a very capable bluray player can be had for 170 notes.

i have owned both and got rid of the ps3 as it just wasnt getting used enough so i kept the 360, the small amount of games there are out on the ps3 just didnt interest me and the so callled big hits on it where so so for me

Oh please, this is becoming an age-old phrase and is just plainly untrue.

i have both thanks, i have nothing to gain from trying to convince him to go either way. the 360 has a bigger, better library of games. as its a christmas present for the kids imo its the better choice.

do you have something better to contribute to the thread? im half temped to tell you where to shove that post tbh. no, thats a bit harsh lol.

I have both and find myself using PS3 more. Depends on the game I guess.

Gears of war 2 - xbox
resistance 2 - ps3

in short, get both

As long as your not obssessed about playing every game out there and dont like missing out on a game which is apparely sex itself on the other console

then pick PS3 - plenty of good games out now. Get a nice bluray player into the bargain as well.

The problem starts...when you start to think you're missing out on something. (and tbh yeah lol you would miss out on Fable 2, Gears 2 etc and they are good games that dont have a ps3 equivalent)

BUT as long as you avoid everything to do with the console you DONT buy then jobs a good un :D  See no evil hear no evil rgr.

Just for a change I wouldnt ever take much notice of people who have both consoles in terms of console use, if you have both its pretty obvious that one will probably get played more than the other.
If you dont have both consoles you will always miss out on games, but as you are a "sony fan" then get a PS3. There are more than enough games out now to keep any die hard gamer happy, and get LBP as 4 off you can play one of the most fun games out. It also makes a fantastic BD player and is one of the best DVD upscalers for its price.
As for Price well it depends on the situation, if you want to play games online then this is extra for the 360, if you need to connect wirelessly then again its extra for the 360 and a BD drive is not an option. Much the same as if you dont need wifi, BD, free online then the 360 is a far cheaper alternative.

I have both and if I had to keep just one it'd be the PS3 as its quieter, has a few half decent games but trumps the 360 when it comes to media playback (which is what I use it mostly for).

TBH you'll do fine with either one.

I'd say just look at the games on both and see which your kids (and you) would prefer.
^This. If you want to primarily play games then the 360 has the largest, best library hands down. If you want a blu-ray player as your main focus then get a ps3.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I'm beginning to think that a 360 arcade version may be the better option as to be fair my kids are only 6 and 12 years old! Is me being selfish for wanting a PS3 if I'm honest. I'll just have to wait until i can afford that one for myself.

Quick question about the 360 arcade, does it allow you to save games?

Yes, as it either ships with a memory card, or if an absolutely brand new version console (which are appearing now), it has onboard flash memory that can be used for saves.

Surley if its mainly for the kids then isnt a Wii a good option?

I bought a PS3 recently for three reasons: firstly, I can't stand the noise and heat that the 360 outputs, but the recent ability to install games should cure that (although I would get a hard drive version rather than the Arcade to do this!). Secondly, I wanted to play games online over wi-fi. Xbox Live and the wi-fi adapter would have cost me the majority of the price difference between the PS3 and the 360. Finally, most of my mates have PS3s and I wanted to play online games with them.

I'm chuffed with the PS3-it honestly impresses me every time I turn it on, and everything about it just works sleekly and smoothly. That said, if price is an issue, and if you don't need Live and a Wi-Fi adapter (I assume the kids won't be going online?), the Xbox may be a better bet for you.

I would definately go for one with a hard drive over one without one though. I personally find the noise of the 360's disc drive unbearable, and would definately want to install my games if I ever bought one.

It comes down to a few things, what type of games do you play, what do your friends play on, how much are you willing to pay and would you get value our of blu-ray.

I was wondering the same thing this time last year and i got a 360 in the end. It had the games i prefer, my friends all had one and it was cheaper.

Yes you need the wireless adaptor and gold but they can be had for 34 quid and 24 quid respectively.

as for people saying the 360 is to loud then heres a really easy fix stop playing games with the volume on you tv turned of ffs, even having the 360 near the tv if you have the volume on moderate then the 360 can not be heard

Depends on the unit, one of my mates has an older one that drowns out the tele, another has a recently refurbed one that isn't much louder than the PS3. I think newer units are far less likely to be noisy.

To the Op: End of the day, it all comes down to games and what you want your kids to play. Look at the games libraries of each console and see which you think is best.

Key words: bigger and better. And while some will argue about better (although not me), the way you writ that first post made it sound like the PS3 has a very lacking games library. And this is what I feel is untrue.

And yes I am contributing to the thread by bringing another opinion into it. Your opinion isn't the be and end all, I'm sorry to say.

Edit: Although you weren't specific about it, you were quick to defend yourself from "Xbot" responses. Just so you know, I knew that you weren't (if that makes sense). And I am not a PS3 mobster. We just both have a preference for a machine.
