Can't decide..360 or PS3?

It would help if people actually took notice of the fact, that the guy wants it for his 8 & 12 years old kids. Instead they spout crap about loads of back catalogue games which are more suited to the older audience...

To the OP, you need to look at the games available and then decide, price or features mean nothing if they don't have anything to play.

I personally would recommend a PS3 for the likes of Little Big Planet, Everybodys Golf, Motorstorm PR, Ratchet & Clank and the Pixeljunk series, all of which are suitable and in most of those your kids can play together. I'm not sure what games there are on the 360 for the youngsters, but if a sensible someone here can give some advice in that respect, I'm sure you'll get a better overrall picture.

a bigger catalogue of games also applies to games for children you know. one of the biggest pluses imo is that you can pick up a lot of games very cheapily on the 360 and im sure a parent would appreciate saving a bob or 10 here and there.

you people in the consoles do nothing but jump all over eachother.

All this talk of huge games catalogues for children. How many games do you think the kids will have bought or have bought for them over a year period? 50? 100? Probably less than 15 more like. Plenty of games on any platform for children who are not gonna play games all day.

Would you want kids of that age stuck indoors playing games all year long anyway going out buying a new game from this huge catalogue once a week?

Most people on this forum probably buy 20 or less games a year, dunno why catalogue matters to anyone apart from those who play games pretty much everyday and have no jobs etc.

Buy a Wii or a 360, whichever you can get cheapest/best bundle for. PS3 is wasted for kids, but more because it has so many functions they are not going to use, more than to do with games catalogue.

more of them and cheaper. come on :o. i love being able to pick a cheap game from a huge selection for my 360 - i cant do that with my ps3. i like being able to spend £20 on 4 games to tide me over for months and months - cant do that on the ps3..

Honestly, if you want a fair answer on what consoel to get thesedays, either dont ask the question and just ippy dippy it or dont ask the question in the console section.

Well buy a PS2 then. :) Seriously though, I meant in the sense if you look at games out over the last year, I doubt there is much variance in amount of titles released.

If the kids are happy being fobbed of with games from 2 years ago that cost £5 each then great, but I suspect most kids want new games they see on TV once a month, rather than 5 cheapo games from 2 years ago once a month.

Fair duies, for you, but you are not an 8 or 12 year old kid. I can't see young kids picking up 4 games for £20 tbh and thinking "wow bargain, I can sit indoors and play computer games for 4 months for cheap"

Maybe someone should ask the children!!!

So name these games suitable for kids then, that's what the OP needs.

Get them multiple DSs so they can play each other and the like - seems to be the perfect platform for young kids (pre-teens)...

The Wii just seems to disappoint and might be a hard control system to work for kids and I think the X360 and PS3 would be wasted on kids. Also with little fingers I suspect that X360 would probably break far too often than you would like...

Has the OP confirm the age of his kids? I wish people would read the OP before they start to ruin the thread with irrelevant opinion in the sheer desperation to validate their own purchase and therefore their life...

BTW in case anyone wants to check - I have a Spectrum...

I am truly stuggling to comprehend what makes you say that for the 360 and not the PS3 as well? In fact, any piece of major electronics equipment?

More the case that the X360 seems to break down more in general anyway and since it has a tray to load DVDs its just another thing to break, especially with kids around - the PS3 has a DVD slot which makes its just a bit harder to destroy...

Its quite a simple concept - I presume you dont have kids...

And you can imagine the uproar if it breaks and you have to send it off for repair - just like any favourite toy...

LOL, That's a fanboyish view..

We don't hide our electronics stuff in our house, and have tried hard to 'educate' the kids not too touch, which is hard, but has led to a couple of near misses.. One of those was my 2 year old boy almost trying to post something in the PS3..

Then there's the USB/Card reader flap.. just begging to be ripped off by your standards..

When powered off (i.e. no mains power), the 360 has no exposed slots/flaps to do the same, and the DVD tray can't be opened

I think we can just say they as prone to damage from young kids equally..

Kids tend to mimic what you do, so if they see you put something in a slot, or lift a flap, they then start copying you (well mine do), as well of course as dreaming up their own ways of wrecking things.. My Subwoofer front port seems to be storage place for toys, despite my best efforts to educate them!

And the newer 360's seem much better reliability wise, certainly seems the amout of new consoles with RROD doesn't seem disproportionate to PS3 blu-ray drive failures at the moment...

Honestly, what daft reasons will come next? "When the lights are out, the PS3 is harder to see as it's black, so the kids can't find it so easily to break, so it must be the best" ?? :)

And when it comes to having a larger back catalogue of games with some real cheap stuff (like the 4 for £20), I think it's hard to just dismiss it.. The bottom line is, if you can get away with older games, then you will be spending much less and have a larger choice.. That's a 'factor' a lot of parents will consider...

The kids will more than likely get more use out of a 360.

I have both machines and a variety of types of children :)

They rarely touch the PS3.

As for reliability issues, I've had 1c PS3 break and my 360 has always been fine, although I think it would be foolish to consider this the norm.

Ok so the PS3 has Bluray but will your kids notice the difference in quality from DVD to Bluray?

What age are they?

One last thing, if you can pickup a PS3 with backwards compatability to play PS2 games then it's a different matter entirely, unless you already have a PS2.

-edit- just read back:

my kids are only 6 and 12 years old!?

My kids like some of the movie tie-ins (they have time to learn) to be fair, the games they like most (The Simpsons, Force Unleashed, Lego this that and the other, Super hero games) are available on both consoles so just save a bit of cash and grab whichever is cheapest.

I can't think of a single exclusive that they have really taken to.

@Demon

Cheers mate - youve just reminded me why I dont post here - Ill make sure to keep my fanboy comments about DVD drive mechanisms to elsewhere - Ill also tell my relatives who have gone through a couple of X360s (one for the reason Ive just stated) that obviously their children must be retarded for this to happen and its no way indicative of the general build quality of the console...

Ill see if they can be traded in...

What a joke

Get one with the games you like, the BluRay element of the PS3 is no longer a factor anymore as you can get a Sony S350 BluRay player for sub £150 which can be made multiregion with a remote hack.

I'm soon to purchase one or the other. Primarily as an Xmas gift for the kids ;)

Problem is that I just can't decide which one to go for. Tempted by the 360 for the price but I'm a bit of a Sony fan at heart. Is the difference in price for the PS3 justified?

Go for a PS3 and yes the price is justified.

Now you see, had you kept the undermining comments out of it, I would have quite gladly accepted your reply... but you didn't.

Honest to god, people can be so childish over something to stupidly simple as a query as to which product would be best.

By your comment to me, I can only assume you have children, which is rather worrying given the immaturity of your responses so far.

Oops, seems I just dropped to your level. Ah well.
