Cant decide which one to go for

Why do people dislike diesel cars so much I know 2 people both with PEUGEOT 206 1.4 HDI one hs an estae and one has the hatchback both report no problems both cars are 02 plate and do great mpg.

I have had several diesels over the years only had to do glow plugs and normal routine maintenance.

Its just the mpg thats stands out to me on diesel cars.

Generally diesel cars are more expensive to buy in the first place than their petrol alternatives, normally with very little difference in actual MPG, also taking into account diesel is more expensive than petrol, normally unless you're doing high mileage, owning a diesel is pointless and more expensive.

If however, like a lot of people on this site who ask advice and ignore it anyway, I'd go for one of the VW, preferably the TDI. The SDI is awful, but as you insist on a diesel anyway I doubt you'll notice much difference. The Peugeot would be a good choice if only the rest of the car was as good as the engine.

Fiesta MK6 Petrol 1.25/1.4- I have a 1.25 and also do a commute which is around 23 miles round trip. I'm averaging 47.8 MPG (calculated at the pumps).

Reasonably reliable, cheap to service/fix. You should get a 2004 car for your budget.

I do 15k a year now in a car which averages 20MPG :p

To add my 2p to the thread my GF actually owns a 2004 VW Polo 1.4 TDI (75) and I do drive it whenever we need more than 2 seats. She purchased it a few years ago because she had to drive to gatwick and back everyday (150 mile journey) for work. Now that she works much closer and only does about 5k-6k a year she'll be changing it soon.

Overall she doesn't mind the car, but it's had a few more things go wrong than she would like and is sitting on 104k at the moment and she's getting worried about the turbo and diesely bits to the engine. It's slow, very economical but a really crap drive if you ask me.

I wouldn't buy one.

Nothing wrong with the Pug 206 HDI other than brand snobbery. I know people who have had them. High MPG, £30 VED and nothing going wrong apart from the usual consumables.
