I am having trouble displaying a web page, in windows xp.

Im with BT and my connection as far as the home hub is stable.

However 7 out of 10 attempts to view a web page end up with a cannot be displayed message. I connect using either a power line adaptor or wireless dongle.

I tried a repair of windows today with no joy, i am convinced its a windows problem, not a connection problem.

Any ideas appreciated.

Sounds like it could be a DNS issue.

Try using OpenDNS (208.67.222.222/208.67.220.220) or Google's Public DNS (8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4) and see if the problems goes away.

Been with BT years, if thats what you meant by just graduated, if not, i got my degree years ago too :)

What is a DNS issue? Sorry to be dim.

Again all help appreciated.

See when its working, its working, but then it stops and i get the cant display web page etc.

But all the lights on the Home hub router are constant blue, and BT assure me my connection is not dropping out.

My house is in the middle of nowhere, wireless is secure yes, not sharing.

I also get the same problem using power line adaptors, so its not just wireless, i really am stumped.

I fixed a similar issue recently. It was a resolving host error. Web pages wouldn't load properly, sometimes garbled other times it wouldn't load at all. After hitting reload several times it would eventually display. Does that sound similar to what you're experiencing?

My issue was that I had updated my router firmware and the firmware was buggy. I reverted back to my previous firmware and it went back to normal. Did you recently update your router firmware?

Incidentally, I never did figure out why it only affected Win7, but all other puters on XP worked fine?!?!!! I thought it was down to IPv6 being activated, but after deactivating IPv6 i still had the issues on Win7.

Iv tried 2 home hubs and a Linksys router, all the same.

Thanks for your help by the way.

Few questions:
Did you recently upgrade your router firmware?
Did you recently install Windows 7?
Have you seen any pop ups or intentionally activated IPv6 on your operating system?

BT Home hubs update themselves automatically, not sure if its been updated.
They did send me a new one a couple of days ago.

Its windows xp pro.

Not seen any pop ups or activated anything.

I think i will flatten this install of windows and reinstall it again tomorrow, see if that sorts it.

Although a repair of it today didnt help.

Well, if I understood that correctly it doesn't sound like your router is the issue (especially if you've tried to switch it with another router and you're still getting the same problem).

If you did recently get an update for your hub it could be that... is there a way to switch back to your previous firmware before you go and reinstall your OS?

Not that i know of, also i had the same problem with a wag300n Linksys router.

It does suck that you can't get your hands on another laptop/PC.

Are you connected online through WiFi? If so, try hooking up an ethernet cable and see if you get the same problem.

Another troubleshooting option could be to download a free bootable OS (Knoppix or Crunchbang). You download a CD image from their site, burn it to a CD, then when you boot your PC just get it to boot from the CD drive first and whammo your PC will load into a linux operating system.

You should see Firefox installed on it already, just click on it and see if you get issues accessing webpages. That would clearly indicate if your problems are coming from the installed XP OS.

You can download the CD from their website, it's completely free.
Knoppix - http://www.knoppix.net/get.php
CrunchBang Linux - http://crunchbanglinux.org/wiki/downloads

If you do try these boot CD's just make sure you're using a wired connection to the internet (not WiFi). These boot CD's usually have trouble installing drivers for your WiFi but for wired connections they should work just fine.

I hope that helps mate!
