Hope i've explained this ok

I have just installed winxp64 on a seperate partition, however when i try to connect to the net,i'm getting nothing.

I'm connected using the onboard lan on my mobo & its showing in the device manager as marvel yukon 8010 pci gigabit ethernet controller,so that seems to be working ok

It's also showing as connected in the Network connections in the control panel as well  When i pull the cable from the modem it's seeing the cable is unplugged as well,so i figured everything seems to be working ,apart from no net access

What am i doing wrong here ? I don't really have a clue :o

Any help would be great

Rob

so you are trying to connect through a router?

if so u will have to set the ISP information to connect in your router homepage.

Hi

Maybe a little obvious but have you tried running the network connection wizard ... usually solves some problems on shared networks ... i assume your using a router ... if you using a modem then does it allocate network addresses or does that need doing manually ? & more important ... most medems need drivers have you got 64bit drivers ?

hope that is a lil usefull

I'm using a motorolla sb4100 modem,not a router.As you can probably tell,i don't have much of a clue here

I thought it would be just a case of plugging my modem into the mobo & the rest would take care of itself.
I did'nt install modem drivers though. I'll have to see if i can find some

I'm using a netgear pci card to connect just now,but XP64 won't recognise it,so that's why i'm trying to connect this way

Thanks

Rob

Hi

You will definately need modem drivers (64bit) unless you invest in a router as far as im aware.... one of the best places for resources & drivers is www.planetamd64.com you may have to register to get to the downloads section to search or of course the makers webpages for drivers but a lot of hardware still lacks proper 64bit driver support which may leave you little option but purchase a router or stay with 32bit OS.

Any suggestions on a router mate ? I have a 4MB blueyonder connection

Been to Planet 64,no luck there either :(

The first post says that he is connected to his modem via LAN - Drivers shouldn't be necessary there.

The Network Connection Wizard idea is definitely worth a shout.

Just seen that you have changed th Network card that you are using, does your modem limit access by MAC address do you know?

Hi

Any basic router with built in modem would do it i guess ... im currently using a Netgear DG834 on two pc's both have x64 on them & a MaxDSL connection but im no expert on whats best ... Netgear is just usually more commonly available & in most cases user friendly just make sure you get a built in firewall ( most have this now) as x64 lacks software firewalls to a large degree execpt for windows built-in one.

Thanks very much for the pointers mate ;) I shall have to go & have a look

Not quite sure what to do as yet though

Easy with the talk of new routers, its very premature for that!

Rob43, let me just check that I understand the situation

1. You are dual booting

2. You are on Cable internet

3. You connect to your cable modem via ethernet.

If I’ve got all that right then hopefully this will all be relevant 

First I would boot back into your old OS, plug the modem back into your netgear NIC, does the internet work ok? I’m guessing it will (in fact it is probably how you are posting :D).

Still in your old OS, does it work with the onboard network card?

Hi

Agreed talk of routers is possible too early and i should have asked more details .. but i would still suggest a router ( if dsl ) for the added protection of firewall which x64 does lack a little in software

Indeed, especially ones that won't work (DG834).

Tried switching the modem off (and disconnecting the PC), switching the modem on, waiting for the lights to settle, then hooking up the PC?

( if dsl )

I'd suggest reading the thread.

I'm using a motorolla sb4100 modem

Hi

Sorry i must be blind or stupid ( dont consider myself stupid ) but i dont actually see anywhere in the OP that mentions if the connection is DSL , dial-up or Cable ... it mentions unplugging a cable ( assumed ment the network cable not a NTL cable ) which was detected as being disconnected ( assumed windows x64 reported a network cable had been removed) .. apologies to original poster if i was wrong in my assumptions i shall zipp it and let others who think they know better help.

Well basically my hunch is that it is the MAC address (unique identification code for all network hardware) of your Netgear nic that is registered with BlueYonder and thus your modem won't route any traffic to your computer as the onboard NIC will have a different MAC. I have very little experience with Cable internet, but when helping friends to add wireless to their cable connection I know it wouldn't work until I had given the router the MAC address of the NIC in the computer that was originally connected.

As far as I can see there are a number of options to try:

1. Get your Netgear NIC working in XP64

2. Register the new MAC with BY (I'm not sure if you can have multiple MACs registered though)

3. MAC spoofing (fool your modem into thinking that you are connecting with your old Netgear card)

First off, thanks for all the help & sorry for not making myself very clear :o

Correct on all points mate :D Just tried to get it working with the onboard network card with my old OS & no luck :( So i must be doing something wrong here......am i not ?

I just can't get my head around internet stuff(modems, routers etc)

here's what coming up with the onboard network switched on,so the onboard is showing in the device manager & i have drivers installed as well

You don't need to register them anyway, you go through the process I described.
