Can't get keyboard to power up PC

I've set up my old PC in the kitchen for media streaming but because the tower is kind of hidden away behind the table it's a bit annoying having to stretch over to turn it on. I've tried to get wake on keyboard to work but it's not having it.
Things I have tried:

  • Gone through BIOS to make sure wake on keyboard is enabled and any other relevant setting, make sure all USB support is there etc
  • Set all keyboard devices and USB hubs power management to allow this device to wake the computer and (where possible) unticked allow the computer to turn off this device to save power
  • In windows power plan, disabled USB select suspend

One other thing I've noticed which is odd is that the keyboard doesn't work straight away in Windows, i.e. it takes a couple of settings before I can press a key to access logon screen. It's like it's waiting to be initialised or something. However, it works fine in the BIOS without any 'warmup' time.

This is really annoying because I literally had the opposite problem on my desktop PC a couple of years ago, whereby accidentally pressing a key would make the PC power up!

Motherboard is GIGABYTE GA-Z77-D3H Intel Z77

As daft as this might sound have you got the keyboard in the right usb socket, some motherboards have specific 'keyboard sockets' ?

Also are you shutting down the pc or putting it into hibernation/standby?

The manual states wake-on keyboard function with that motherboard is for a PS/2 connected keyboard. I guess you could use a ps/2 to usb adapter, but i don't know if that would work (presumably it would, but it may not).

Awesome, plugged in an old ps2 keyboard and it booted up first time! Never occurred to me it was ps2 only because the bios doesn't mention it's ps2 keyboard and most of the online suggestions referred to ensuring USB devices had permissions to wake the computer.

Cool beans. :)

Might be an idea try an adapter also (if you have one), just to see if it works.

Is ErP enabled in BIOS?
That limits power draw in standby and shuts down power to USB ports and disables various wake on things.
