it's smooth because it's flat, but we're talking about the microstructure being flat. People don't lap their cpus because they're the wrong shape.

Well I suppose you can either laugh or cry about these things, but either way that is simply not true - people do lap their CPUs because they are the wrong shape. You need it to be flat and smooth to get the best possible contact (despite what certain Thermalright reps might say - see below -quote from the rep answering a query about why their heatsink had a curved base- )

I brought up this issue to our Thermalright rep today, and it turns out this is done intentionally, for two main reasons:

1 - As most of you know, the IHS on the chips are rarely perfectly flat, and tend to be slightly convex. Thus, convex IHS + concave HS gives a better contact, in general.

2 - The concave shape helps keep it from "sticking" to the IHS. Some of you may have had problems in the past, when the Heatsink is seated for any length of time. Sometimes it's hard to get it to release, and some have damaged processors this way. The concave shape of the base is supposed to help reduce this.

Obviously that is classic 'hoop' from the rep to cover their poor production techniques - if you want the best possible performance, you need to lap both the IHS (or remove it entirely if that's your thing) and the Heatsink. It's done to ensure that the surfaces have the best possible contact, which requires them to be both flat (or uniformly curved if you want to be pedantic) and 'smooth' - if you could do a good enough job you wouldn't even need any thermal compound - but that really would take some effort.

You can get upto 1500 in Halfords and thats way good enough for me,

In fact I have just got back with a selection,

I'm pretty sure ocuk doesn't sell anything they do.
