I will awaken to find myself paralyzed. I cannot move at all however i know I am awake. After a few minutes of trying to move i will re-gain my ability to move.Happen to anyone else on here?

Believe it's called sleep paralysis, nothing to worry about from what I hear. Still I'd probably **** myself if that happened to me.

EDIT: Erm looking at wikipedia it may possibly be a symptom of something, so better check yourself out then.

No swearing

I think I have sleep paralysis too, very scary, but like lucid dreams you can control it and overcome issues like fear.

Edit - No I'm talking about REM atonia.

I've had sleep paralysis about a dozen or so times in my life, horrible. Also happened once or twice as I was falling asleep. The key thing is just knowing not to panic as your perfectly fine, and it passes after a few seconds.

I thought the time had nothing to do with anything it was just down to your body how long the "episode" lasts?

Yeah, I've had it a few times. I've not really panicked from it, but it's certainly alarmed me.

The first time it happened I think was a couple of years ago. I randomly woke up to some tall, strange figure dressed completely in black (couldn't see their face), and leaning over me about to stab me. My initial reaction was to jump out of bed, but I couldn't move and as the figure got closer I flailed wildly and jumped out of bed just to watch them disappear as I lunged for them. I sat back and was very confused. I fell asleep shortly after and it almost feels like a dream now.

The last time it happened was about a month ago when I was trying to sort my sleep out (for the billionth time), so I was suffering from extreme sleep deprivation. I had no images this time, but it happened about three times on the trot where I woke up extremely hot, confused and unable to move. Oddly, I did find breathing quite difficult but it passed after a few seconds. As it sends you into 'fight or flight' I was almost scared to go back to sleep in case it happened again. I sat up for about ten minutes listening to music to calm down, put my lamp on and just fell asleep. Each time it happened that night, it was a precursor or following on from a lucid dream (which were more like nightmares anyway).

I used to have something similar pretty regular I think I've had it the same around a dozen times.

I used to think I'd woken up and there was something in the room but I couldn't move now matter how hard I struggled. Then as it crawled up my legs onto me I used to wake up with a jump.

Apparently my gf says when I do it I'm fast asleep but I thrash around kicking.

Not got a clue what causes it wether it's stress or eating cheese before bed lol.

Has anyone woken up having slept on your arm and you can move properly but your arm is completely dead and floppy. That is weird!

Yup.

That happened to me on Saturday morning.

Woke up to find that the wife had decided to become a starfish across the bed, leaving me inches of room at the edge. I had slept on my arm for a considerable amount of time and when I awoke, could not move it for nearly 10 mins.

Yes, best time to masturbate, feels like someone else is doing it.

lmao

I've had this before. It only happens when I (can only assume) I dream of a spider crawling on me or towards me (but im sort of awake) amount of times I cannot move, but when I do, its like a burst of energy, I spring up, turn the lights on, and check for a spider, for about 30 seconds, I actually believe they is one... LOL.

This happens a lot? would like to know what causes it (apart from me being a wuss and being scared of spiders )

Also, It happens when im just going to sleep, and I cannot move. LOL.

Sorry for being slightly OT.

Rofl. Wierdest thing on here, bif I remember correctly it's called "The Stranger".

But as for OP I can't say I've had the same experience. I think I may have but probably not.

Maybe your being invaded by Lilliputions...... check for string near your bed lol....

I wouldnt worry about it, if you do, get to a doctor and let him examine you, i think there are sleep clinics in most citys now, they show have good advice.

Indeed...not a nice felling...I've done it before, gone to move my arm, and it just kinda fell back down and slapped me in the face...

Also woke up with both arms numb, that was different...Luckily I know it goes away after a while, but the first time it happened it did shock me a bit.

Hah! Kinda hard when you can't move your arm ;)

But chrikey, must be awful to be awake yet not be able to move :(...Don't I've had it...The most I get is a type of falling falling where I go to counter-act it in the dream but just end up springing up really quickly! :p

I do it quite often. I move it very gingerly though, with my other hand, as not being able to feel it, I always think I'm going to move it in a bad way and damage something :/
