I dont want to install Windows 10 at the moment. i've removed and hidden the Win update which gives you the annoying system tray icon about it.

however, when i go to Windows update i've got 18 important updates to install. however, if i click to install it goes to "downloading Windows 10" which i dont want. ive hidden / unselected the Windows 10 update from there but it still does it.

any ideas how i can download those important updates without Windows 10 forcing itself on me?

I had this on a Windows 7 laptop the other day, I just went through with the updates and it didn't install Windows 10.

Have you uninstalled the KB3035583 update? Make sure that that has definitely gone first.

I was reading that Windows 10 is downloaded automatically as an update and just sits there until you decide to install it. Even if you never intend on installing it it will download.

I didn't read the full article but that was the initial part of it.

yeah i uninstalled that and that got rid of the tray icon

You should be alright then, iirc the graphic changes from the 'downloading Windows 10' one to the normal downloading one when you start the update.

You could always make a quick backup image beforehand, just in case.

yeah and it was using a load of space on my HD. i sorted that with a disk cleanup which removed the install files.

That downloading windows 10 notification when installing updates is a pile of bull since if modern setup host and windows 10 update (or upgrade) aren't running when you run task manager then it isn't actually doing anything relating to the windows 10 upgrade, and what it is doing is installing all the updates.

There are a lot more then the two known updates that are related to the windows 10 upgrade (someone did link to a story that shows all the updates in windows 7 and 8.1 that are linked to the windows 10 upgrade in some way or another) that would need to be removed and there is an update (which is probably going to be pushed to those who didn't upgrade after the first year after release is done) which stops the upgrade and also blocks the download of the upgrade.

I've just ran into this issue as well. Cannot get passed "Get Started". Even after removing KB3035583.

It is rather annoying to be honest. I have that same message on my main laptop, which is running Windows 8.1. My main PC and secondary laptop are on Windows 10, there is a reason why I am leaving that thing on 8.1... :(

Can't confirm the following but the full procedure would appear to be as follows...

First, cancel your Windows 10 reservation :

1) Click on the White GWX icon located on the right hand side of the taskbar

2) Next click the Hamburger menu located in the upper left corner and in the 'Getting the upgrade' list of option, select 'View confirmation'

3) Now in the lower left , click on 'Cancel reservation' and when prompted to verify that you really want to cancel, click on 'Cancel reservation' button.

Now uninstall and hide the following updates :

KB3035583
KB2976978
KB3035583
KB3044374
KB3068708

After this you may want to disable automatic updates for now so you can review any updates first.

I've just updated a Windows 8.1 PC that had this exact thing, after making sure that KB3035583 is uninstalled you just update as normal, it makes it look like Windows 10 is being downloaded and installed but it isn't. It just installs whatever updates you selected...

I'd take an image of the partition though, just to be safe.

Edit: Just tried on another Win7 pc and that one didn't mention anything Win10 related so it mustn't be on every installation. You've got to make sure the KB update isn't sometimes magically unhidden and selected in the updates though. So I always just manually update and make sure it isn't selected before updating.

Well I just made sure the Windows 10 update was not ticked ..even though it's in the updates again , I dont really wanna use 10 ...plus it's not really free anyway is it ?

Why do people keep saying this nonsense. Yes it's completely and utterly free upgrade for people with existing licenses.

The fact that one may not transact cash in order to procure Windows 10, does not mean Windows 10 is free.

You're simply paying for it by proxy by relinquishing your privacy and/or rights. Microsoft still gets paid hard cash for every Windows 10 upgrade, you'd have to be pretty silly to believe Microsoft is giving stuff away for free lol.

This but, not a worry.

Yes they get money in adds in some modern apps. The real way they make money though is through the app store, music, video, Skype, office 365 etc. They also want more developers for modern apps which is why they are giving it away for free.
