Hopefully this hasn't been done before.

After doing a reinstall i usually have to start downloading all the essentials again as i am never organised enough to actually burn them to cd. So i thought it's about time i made a cd of all the useful applications i use/need. That got me thinking of asking you guys what freeware you consider to be essential? For me so far i have the usual suspects

Firefox
OpenOffice
RealPlayer
Quicktime
AVG
Adobe Reader
Gimp
Azeurus
Divx

Knowing that there are some well clued up people on this forum, perhaps you could tell me what your essential freeware is as i am sure there is tons of good stuff that i've never even heard of before.

You could replace a lot of the media players and codecs with VLC

Its simply the best

sid

winamp lite
media player classic (nothing is better than this for video) + ffdshow
utorrent
eac
hamachi
firefox
paint.net (rearely need to use it tho)
filezilla

use real alternative and quicktime alternative, 10x better than the crappy players they have! th players add all sorts to startup and try to take over your life www.free-codecs.com

Firefox + about 10 add-ons
SmartFTP
Live Messenger
Xfire
Hamachi
MIRC
Foobar2000 + AMIP plugin
Audacity
EAC
LAME
VLC
uTorrent
DVD Decrypter
AutoGK
Crapcleaner
Hijackthis
CPU-Z

Isn't Hamachi that LAN over the Internet tool? Is it any good? Wouldn't mind giving it a try sometime. Just need a guinea pig to test it on.:D

Yes, it's a very useful Virtual Private Network app. Basically, someone creates a network on their client (network name and password) then other people can join with the login info provided.

Quite a nice freebie prog that, thanks.
Yeah I don't use it much but it is very useful. Version 3 is due out in February although the v3 Beta 3 is out now if you want to give that a go.

Sounds good. Might give it a try with a mate over the weekend.

i'll msn you next week, to try it out

once you join a network (or create your own), you can ping/share/remotedesktop/play games via computername instead of ip address, its pretty damn good software :)

Daemon Tools

i find clone drive to be better, its a lot less invasive, and you can hide all icons, and just have a rightclick drive, mount option.. (no need to crowd your iso or cue files with extra context menu's)

you only need the other features that dtools gives if you're using downloaded copies of things

also, almost forgout about this..

the most usefull of all, a freeware good quality image resizer

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=82191

needs .net 2, but the program itself is only about 125kb

you can drag as many pictures as you want into it and it'll convert them all (currently doesn't support subfolders)

Does one of the XP powertoys not do this and have similar features?
