Can't remember the drive?

Now I may have an excuse as I drive in 8 miles, which takes about 45 mins

Thats worse than my 15 miles in 45mins.

I remember most of the drive everytime mainly because of other peoples driving. Today as I was crusing on a dual carriageway @ 70mph and some fool in a Prelude decided to fly past me at >100mph because that clearly proves his car is quicker :p

Happens in everything in your life, once it is familiar your brain will see it as a task that you do subconsciously, just like shopping and you pick up a tin of beans automatically and everything else you buy regularly, but you will look at products you dont buy as you need to make a decision consciously about it.

very true, its one of the 4 stages of concious/subconscious thinking.
apparently driving in this state is quite dangerous as should your situation change suddenly from what your used to you would be slower to react to it. however its hard to stay out of this mode when your so damn used to it.

my 15 mile journey to work and 15 back regularly has me thinking i dont remember it!

Maybe I dont feel it because I drive (and ride) defensively, assuming everyone else on the road is an idiot and out to crash into me, which comes from riding bikes.

I always get this now. As soon as I started riding 80 miles a day on a motorbike, the journey became so routine and so predicatable by the time I get to my destination, I'd take a second to think where I am.

Now I just drive a few miles to work in my car and its kinda the same, although it has caused me an accident once when I broke routine and drove a different way home to pick up my girlfriend. Well that and a dodgy car too, but the latter wouldn't have come into play if I realised this wasn't the usual route keep eyes more peeled.

It's funny how you never get the feeling after sitting in a traffic jam for hours

Yer, it happens to me, and to be honest it quite scares me that I can get somewhere in a car perhaps traveling 60 or 70 mph depending on the roads and not remeber the journey.

I know that Im concentrating enough, but I cant help but ask myself questions about how hard I was concentrating when I get there, in order to have forgotten parts of the journey.

Yep I'v had this plenty of times. nothing to do with being tired. I think it's because something is so mundane and banal that your brain just discards the data immediately rather than storing it as memory. I don't think it means you were asleep or in a state of unawareness. Most people will get this when driving along roads routinely used.

I once went and test drove an MG rover and the experience was so mind numbingly banal that I found myself back in the rover garage wondering if I'd been out in it yet. Happens to the best of us.. don't worry about it.

I've had it happen to me a couple of times, usually when I've been talking to my (now ex) girlfriend who was sat next to me. After say 10mins I'd suddenly realise that I have no recolection of the past 10mins driving :p

Quite scary I thought!

I have the opposite. Sometimes I set off to drive into town and end up driving towards work on autopilot.

In all your cases you need to start stimulating your memory, try to learn a poem or a song or two every week, take cod liver oil every day, add some salad to the burgers.

As a workoholic I had about four years when I would drive somewhere, go somewhere and have my mind pre-occupied with something else to the point of completely not remembering entire days. Even worse - three years ago my girlfriend organized holiday on Isle of Wight for us and I have pictures of it, souvenirs, tickets, the whole nine years and I DO NOT REMEMBER A SINGLE DAY of it. Not a room, not a building, not a single walk, driving there, spending time, partying there, nothing. And so one day I sat down and realized - if you don't remember what you were doing because you were tired, preoccupied and thinking of something else and you don't remember what you were thinking of either then you're just stealing time from yourself. Live it. If you drift away during journey then change radio station, sing, think of funny stories to write down, learn italian from CD. If you drift away everywhere else then refurbish your life, go bunjie jumping, sky diving, wake up. Just so you can say in few years I know exactly what air smelled like, I know exactly what she was wearing and I know exactly how it felt rather than.. amm.. what were we talking about? And how did I get into this thread...

When I lived in and around Truro when at uni, I lived for a year out in the sticks about 5 or 6 miles to the south of the town, and then for another year and a bit in town. In the second year, I found myself at my old house on more than one occasion, after a late night tired drive home after playing a gig or whatever. Then feeling really quite silly, and turning around and going to my proper house!

I saw something on the television (omg on TV, must believe it) some time ago that said driving, especially on motorways whre its a rather 'boring' place to be, where everything's the same, driving gets very subconcious, you're still aware of what you're doing the same amount, just not on the same level, so you dont remember doing it..

.. something like that anyway ¬_¬

Same here, I go past junction after junction and sometimes wonder, did I acutally look? Half the time if I try hard enough I remember, not sure why I forget thou!

You want to try driving a truck mate, I can't remember 90% of my mileage I'm sure of it. :o

Mental switch off for the win. :D

I sometimes switch off when im driving a route im used to, mainly when im coming home, after 10 mins or so of driving i dont remember anything that happened! I also hate it when your not thinking of where your supposed to be going and end up going home when your meant to be going to someone elses house  :p
Only girlies do that :p
