Can't sleep, and have given up. What do you do when you can't sleep?

Wax the dolphin

This actually really helps to re-induce sleep. Also ear-plugs really stop you waking up. The occasional full-strength Nytol also knocks you out.

Worst thing to do is use a computer or anything which starts stimulating your brain away from it's sleep pattern.

Doing some high intensity exercise for a decent amount of time, e.g. 45 min, early in the evening will help.

I once spent a summer working on a farm doing things like hay baling. I got home at 6pm, I had to go to bed at 7.30pm because I was utterly physically exhausted.

Rgds

i usually get a 1 hour anytime between 7-9 where i get so sleepy (happens every night) and thats it. i wont be even remotely tired again until the next night at about the same time. really really annoying

I sit up in bed and read for about 30 mins. That or listen to an audio book. Not sleeping is made so much worse by stressing about not sleeping :).

I tried some of the things Freefaller mentioned last night, it was working really well, I could feel my body going heavy and that I was drifting off, and then some **** messaged me on facebook which made my phone vibrate on my wooden bedside table and ruin everything.

My alarm doesn't wake me up unless my phone is also on vibrate, and my alarm clock is useless...

I could have killed them. :p

I get bouts of insomnia which fortunately only tend to last a week or two, often sporadically. Not the greatest thing to start to get over, get back into some sort of sleep pattern and then only for your young child to get ill and wake up every 5 minutes. i.e. my week this week!

Seriously struggle to function without coffee on days like today. Can’t drink caffeine after 6pm though as it keeps me up.

Worst bout of insomnia I had was probably an average of 3-4 hours sleep for 6 months... after a couple of weeks of that I really struggled to function. Was almost ready for the funny farm after a few months. Was just before my daughter was born so my sleeping pattern was screwed for a long time!

Get a better phone or buy an alarm clock. :p

Or just turn off mobile data on the phone overnight ... it's not as if he'd be checking it as he'd be asleep. Then turn it on again when you get up and by the time you've done your morning ablutions things have synced and can be read over breakfast ....

Just stop thinking about that car and those sleepless nights will stop. :D
There is probably some degree of truth to this... :D

Good idea, thanks. Now I feel thick.
Also, what is "breakfast"? Is that that thing that is supposed to come between jumping out of bed and jumping in the car? :p

I've had bouts of insomnia. I find its worse if I have a set time to go to bed. Mostly I just go to bed when I feel tired, then I sleep. If go to bed and deliberately try to sleep it ain't going to happen. Get up, read a book, watch telly, do anything until feel tired, then goto bed.

Your body has be trained to think of bed as somewhere to sleep not as somewhere to lie awake all night. If you're not sleepy don't lie in the bed, simple as is.

If I don't have my tablet next to me streaming videos I will really struggle to get to sleep. I have to watch something I've seen plenty of times before so I don't get too into it, but need the sounds to help shut my mind off from thinking too much.

Annoys my GF quite a bit mind you. I anyways listen with headphones in one ear, but the fact I can't just fall asleep like she does seems to annoy her lol.
