Can't sleep, and have given up. What do you do when you can't sleep?

Waking the wife can be quite amusing.

I'll go for a fruit juice if it's the middle of the night or just get up if it's later.

Supposedly you should get out of bed, read a book or something that doesn't involve a screen, and then go back to bed when you are tired. Rinse and repeat until you have trained your body to sleep in bed.

In reality, I just roll about for hours until I eventually get to sleep and go to work exhausted.

I go back to work. Or back to whatever project or game I've been spending time on. Then sleep the next night instead, usually without any trouble.

Seems a bit wasteful to just lie there.

I've not been able to sleep properly since I was 16.
And if I do sleep, it won't be more than a few hours so I'm used to waking at 3-4am and then preparing myself for part 2 of the sleep. Every-single-night.
Been awake since 3am today as couldn't get back to sleep.

Some nights I will lay in bed from 11pm untill 7am ish, and genuinely unsure if I got to sleep at some point. It's horrible.

I used to have a lot of problems sleeping but since I've used these 'tactics' I have been much better.

1- try to go to bed and get up at the same time everyday.
2- if you are in bed and cannot sleep, get up and watch something boring (not interesting or stimulating) and go back to bed only when you feel tired. You might end up going to bed quite a bit later but its much more effective than laying their wide awake.
3- in the build up to going to bed keep the lights off as much as possible and don't do anything that is too active. Light is very important to the release of sleeping/waking hormones so try not to mess your body clock.

Don't drink caffeine a couple of hours before bed. If I'm struggling I sometimes find sleeping at the opposite end of the bed helps :D No idea why.

I have absolutely no problem falling asleep, its staying asleep I have an issue with.

If I allow myself to fall asleep on the sofa even for a short time I'm awake the next couple of hours. Same if I'm reading in bed, if I nod then wake when the book falls then I'm reading another hour. Also have a 2 year old daughter who wakes up about 5 which often means the end of my sleep. She crawls in with me and is sparked out within minutes.

I tend to get up, make a cuppa and go back to bed to read. Had "wimmin" issues this week which hasn't helped.

I never really have a problem with sleeping but if I ever do then I have the advantage that my wife likes to be 'woken' in the middle of the night. ;) That'll definitely help me get some sleep a little bit later. :)

They use CBT to treat insomnia; they teach your body to associate bedtime with sleeping only, rather than lying there trying to sleep and failing.

They do this by restricting the amount of time you sleep to say 6 hours, then gradually increase it until you have a consistent amount of sleep each night, rather than having some whacky sleeps tons one night, sleep not much the next etc.

I'm guessing you sleeping habits are all over the place? My housemate is like that, will sleep all day and go to bed at stupid times, then wonder why he feels so tired when he has to actually get up for work.

So yeah, sort your sleeping habits out, stick to a schedule.

Hah man, this has me absolutely creasing in the office!!

I have to say, I don't have a great deal of trouble sleeping, but I try and meditate or count to 100. I never get to 100. Getting out and making the bed again helps, I feel like it kind of resets my comfort, so I can get nice and comfy again. Sometimes I have a little snack, which can help. Reading is the main one for me, though. I've had a rule for years (I used to read looooads), which is that if at any point while reading my eyes shut, that's it. I have to put the book down and go to sleep. I also try to use minimal movement at this point because anything wakes me up.
