Having scoured the university, there are no squat racks of any sort to use for squatting. This is really disappointing for me as I was really hoping to drive the squat numbers up while I'm here. I will look further afield but in the mean time what would you recommend I do instead? There is no proper leg press machine (the existing one doesn't work the quads at all) ...

barbell Hack squats?

He can't really do BB lunges with any real weight unless you are wanting him to clean the weight over his head (I suppose this might not be a problem at first).

I'd just go with hack squats and anything else you can use to train legs. Make the exercise difficult by using slow, 3-4 second negatives. Legs tend to respond better to higher rep ranges anyways so you should be ok.

I asked this recently and the general consensus was that a front squat would be suitable as you only have to clean the bar shoulder high and never over your head, and it provides a greater core workout than hack squats and dumbbell squats, as the mass in the latter two exercises lowers your centre of mavity thereby decreasing the amount of work done by the upper body.

I'm doing front squats and they kill the torso.

Front squats then... the quad's nemesis! See how it goes for tomorrow.
As far as tonight, those HC2PP's are fantastic chong!

Try the ultimate in humbling lifts. The Overhead Squat. You will laugh at how hard even just the bar is the first time you do it.

Too right. First time I tried it I seriously overestimated how much I could lift and ended up with pretty much just the bar. :(

Thank God I train at home!

I really need to get round to introducing those into my routine sometime. Awesome exercise!

I'm thinking of alternating them with front squats, I think it would work well? :)

My lord! How much hand and wrist flexibility do ya need for front squats! Towards the end I cottoned on that my shoulders could do most of the holding... but definitely had sore hands for an hour afterwards!

You get used to it very quickly.
