Capital One Cup - Fourth Round ** Spoilers ** [27/28 October 2015]

I will always fail to understand how players can supposedly be so good at football that they're paid tens of thousands a week but they struggle to hit the target from a penalty.

It's just amusingly bad the utter dross we have at this club is. Periera did more tonight than both Carrick and Fellaini combined. He's 19 and he knows how to hit a ball at a rectangle. Carrick looked like he'd never seen a football before when he took that penalty.

Patchy first half performance but a much better second half performance. It was good for Firmino to, nearly, get a full game under his belt and he impressed too. The other big positive was Ibe - he's struggled recently but he seemed to start getting back to the form he showed when he first got into the side last season.

Will Rooneys amazing performance tonight convince LvG to drop him... will it heck.

I've mentioned before, the risk is you play him up front and the pressure's too much/you harm him in the long term and he doesn't become as good as he should, or would if developed more carefully.

Is he going to be developed better by putting him out on the wing and nullifying most of what has made him look so good. Are we just going to ruin him by asking him to play a role that he is not that great at for so long that he loses the desire or ability to play as a CF.

I wouldn't say nullify what he does well. He's been very very good on the ball, running with it. He finds his way between two defenders using intelligence and a bit of just straight up power. Not comparing him to Messi but in the way so many players stop or go around, pass backwards or run into a corner Messi just goes through players and Martial tries to do the same. He's good out wide, the problem is those moments where he wants to play a quality one two with the striker to either set himself up or get himself in a better position to cross/pass.... well he has Rooney.

It was only one game, but the entire offence clicked without Rooney in the team, he makes everybody around him worse when he's on the pitch.

I still don't think LVG is the reason Rooney plays or is the captain but at some point he's got to either stand up to the bosses and show that to win things again they need to drop him or walk out of the club and let them take the blame for Rooney starting.

Coming 7th wasn't the worst thing Moyes did while at Utd, it was oversee Rooney getting a 5 freaking year extension. This is a guy who before signing the deal had what turned up for two summers, or three, in worse physical condition. he clearly isn't ageing well in fitness/physical terms, 5 year deal was insane for a player in his situation regardless of how good they might be. More mental is at the time he was not remotely close to his best and hadn't been near it for ages with all signs pointing to big decline. 3 year deal on half what they offered max he should have gotten.

This is one of the big issues, how do you stick Rooney on the bench for 3.5 years while picking up well over double what most of the squad make? Worse still, which team do you palm him off too? Big payday in MLS/Qatar IF he was on 100k a week currently might work, but 300k, he'll make more by staying.
