Capital One Cup - Second Round ** Spoilers ** [26/27 August 2014]

I wonder if this might prompt us to make sure we buy another defender. No matter the combination of players so far, the 3 guys at the back don't look even remotely confident.

I said it before, I'll say it again. I do not think that a back three, with two wing backs is the right system for Manchester United or English football at the minute.

or sack 5 at the back? it's garbage! thankyou LVG for making managers out there know that 4 is the key...

The system had nothing to do with that. You're telling me the 2/3 goals we conceded from players passing it directly to the opposition would have been prevented by 4-4-2? Nonsense. It's attitude and confidence, both completely absent.

I know all the talk's going to be about Utd but how well did MK play? Some of their football was better than a lot of lower end PL sides. The 2nd goal in particular was a really good move with a top class finish.

Maybe, but it can work. Perhaps it's highly reliant on having excellent midfield cover and very high quality and experienced centre backs. Works fine for Juventus.

I'm not sure having the extra central defender makes up for the fact none of them are particularly great. Then again, if you defend this badly it doesn't matter how many defenders you've got.

Yeah, they were very good in all fairness.

No, but a back three against a single forward is a waste of a man. It works in Italy (as the example I used last time) because the trend is that a lot of side's play with two forwards.

It does not seem to be working, and the wing backs aren't doing well enough at the minute.

Just because I mention that I do not think a back three with two wing backs is the correct system for the players at hand does not automatically mean that the only alternative is "four, four, ******* two".

MK Dons played well, however the point remains they are still a very average League One side.

Juve have a far better defense and midfield than most teams and still struggle in the CL with that formation, not much competition for them in Serie A it seems.

It works for Juventus with, better defenders, better midfielders and better wing backs :p, in a league in which a lot of teams are playing with two up top :p :o.

I personally think it's too confusing having 5 at the back, it seems to me that having that extra man at the back concedes that split second element of knowing when to take your man, as the zones become smaller for each defender. It also means you sort of have to have two people commanding it all. It's just too much. When you have split seconds to react to get to those 50/50's, it makes a big difference.

Both our wing backs were making their debut, I think we can cut them a little slack. Changing a system is never an overnight thing.

Everybody knows I'm not one for making excuses for Utd, and I'm not, they were terrible.

I can't comment on how good they are generally but today they played really well. Sometimes lower league sides can cause upsets playing a defensive, direct style of play but they actually got the ball down and played, and played well.
