Hi all,

In my drive to get back into shape I have been looking at things I would love to do, and one of them is capoeira.

I have managed to find a local place in Stoke just 5 mins from where I work but due to testing our new software yesterday I didn't manage to get down there and speak to them.

Now, I am overweight, unfit and very unflexible. I did kickboxing for 2 years when I was a teenager and loved it.

Does anyone here do capoeira or has in the past? What did you think of it?

Capoeira is much more like a dance than a martial art so be prepared for that. Flexability it vital and a lot of training is done on that so you may fine it hard work to start with.

Personally I'm changing to Tae Kwon do as I love the kicks and jumps but want to incorperate my hands more and do a more rounded art whilst maintaining the fitness levels foot work gives you.

sports forum ;)

I was going to post it in there but as stated it is classed as a dance as well as a form of fighting. Plus I want peoples general opinions on it not just the sports aspect of it.

Kree: Thanks for the input. Yes I am aware of its history and musical basis, I am looking at more of a form of exercise than actual fighting. once I shape I may go back to kick boxing or something a little more extreme. Tried Tae Kwon do with a friend, fun but just didn't feel right to me, not sure why though.

You're fat, unfit, and unflexible, and you want to try a dance/fighting combo?

Good luck =\

It certainly looks impressive, but is definitely a dance rather than a martial art. I am sure learning capoeira will only get you laughed at by proper martial artists.

You're kidding right? It's not a dance it's a martial art purposefully disguised as a dance. First and foremost it's a martial art and a well respected one.

For fitness it's excellent, and as long as you know what to expect, go for it! You might want to look into break dancing too if this interests you.

Have you ever watched two people actually fighting using capoeira? They don't know how to hit because all they've learned are the fancy moves. When they do get a hit in it almost looks like an accident, a floppy foot to the face that probably did more damage to the assailant's foot than to his target's face.

From what I have seen, that applies to the majority of capoeira'ists and the whole thing is just a waste of energy. I am sure there are a lot of exceptions (i.e, if they've learned another martial art as well and mixed it in) and I am sure you are willing to demonstrate but that's the impression I get.

While the above reply is a tad obnoxious he does have a point... if I was a portly chap and looking to get fit and learn how to stick up for myself then Capoeira would probably be last on my list, at least until I got fit and lost weight as many of the moves are very tough to pull off if you're not pretty athletic. OP, if you loved kickboxing then give it another try. :)

No it's not...

Once upon a time it was a real martial art disguised as dance movements by the farm workers to hide it form their colonial masters but nowadays it is largely a dance, and i'd say 95% of schools would train it purely as such, not to train to fight. Hell, most websites who teach it even advertise it as that. It's also NOT well-respected as an MA, as a quick browse on many major MA forums will show you. It's not a fighters art, watching two of them spar is a complete joke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMX9KKzG4-0

Completely fake, I know because I have just watched 'Never Back Down' and it is a clip from that.

I dont need to learn to stick up for myself, I can already do that. My reason for doing it is fitness and flexibility. Although over weight I am not in that bad shape, I can easily out perform many friends who are skinny and to look at me you would say I was stocky, not fat.

The main drawback is my flexibility, and this should help out greatly with that.

Once I feel comfortable I may return to kick boxing or try Muay Thai, or maybe move onto one of the more mixed/hardcore martial arts.
