exactly - nobody cared about iron man or even thor before the movies. Frankly they were pretty low tier marvel properties. Even captain america was not particularly popular.

It doesn't matter what happens in the comics. For a start, there are multiple series, with characters' power changing from one iteration to the next. Secondly, the MCU has been doing things its own way anyway.
