Car back from service

It doesn't sound like a scheduled service to me, all those items just happened to need doing at the same time and yes the belt change on audis is a pain, friend at work had a A3 TDI the dealer did something stupid during the belt change and resulted in a 3k repair bill which the dealer refused to cover, good job it was a fully serviced lease!

No cambelt on the 5 though, so I wont see routine servicing bills that high :p
 
I had a £1000 bill last January on the GTi6 :o

That was a major 40k service - £200ish
Cambelt / tensioners / water pump - £380ish
Full Exhaust - £300

And I can't remember what else....

We just don't charge enough at work! Perhaps we should get the message when people come to pay and go "oh, that's a lot cheaper than I thought it would be" (or some variant of that phrase). Main dealers do charge over the odds though. We rang up Renaults at work a while ago to find out how much they charge per hour for a certain job and they said it's £80 per hour! :eek:

You don't have to remove the whole front of the Audi to do the cambelt. IIRC on the last one my dad did (which was an A4, small possibility it's different) he removed the bolts one by one and put longer bolts in, the front end then just slides forwards on the longer bolts.

More like £6k on a 355 at a main dealer;).

Audi wanted to do £800 of stuff to my A3 at its last annual service.

I heard a good tip for dealership servicing is to go to France, sounds complicated but some do it regularly and get their stamps for the warranty no problem plus the petrol is paid for by savings on the cheap beer brought while there :)

Shouldn't ever need to be changed, unless the car was built/designed poorly or you thrashed nine bells of **** out of it every day for 10 years.

Thats not true camchains do stretch over time/use and if they stretch too much then they do need replacing. They should last a fair while before that becomes an issue though.

Its 150k I hear for some cars, I not sure if it ever snaps normally like a cambelt does, just gets slack.

It will snap if left, although they normally get a little rattley first. My dad had one go on his merc a few years ago luckily only on tickover so it only damaged a couple of valves. Same as a cambelt really worth changing them on high mileage cars as it a lot cheaper than a headoff job and realitively easy as you just attach the new chain to the old one and pull it through.

A lot of the time though it's only the tensioner(s) that need replacing.
