car crash

imagine for a minute that it wasn't a police camera van that caused him to brake (and crash), and that it could quite possibly have been anything else, e.g. animal on road, people in front of him braking hard, dazzled, <insert any other reason why someone needs to scrub off speed>

The fact that the dude needed to scrub the speed off indicates he was going too fast, therefore that is the reason why he crashed - no matter the reason /for/ scrubbing the speed off.

If you can't stop safely/avoid stuff on the road that may suddenly appear (including police vans) you are going too fast (by definition).

So the accident had just occurred? With no paramedics on the scene?

Didn't you stop to help?

Why would I have stopped to help. I didnt have anything to help the situation.
Also there was the guy from the camera van offering assistance and requesting emergency services.

Soupyuk it is possible that the camera van came post accident however from its partially hidden location facing on coming traffic on the hard shoulder as the camera is mointed in the rear of the van I would guess that it was there first however I can not be 100% sure.

This is one of those horrible scenes you see where no matter how you try to explain it to yourself it just doesnt make sense. Thats why I was asking for other peoples opinions.

Although its fair to say the camera van was part of the CAUSE for the accident, it is not fair to say it was in any way to BLAME.

All factors which contributed to the accident are part of the cause but not neccesarily to blame..

personally the second i see a cam or camera van i check my speedo and decide if i need to slow down from there.
anyone that just instictively hits the anchors is someone i'd like on a different road to myself.

That'll be about 90% of the UK's driving population then...

Why would I have stopped to help?

To offer any assistance you could, you can't assess the situation and summarise that every is under control by just driving past.

I would have gotten out and double checked that the emergency services were on their way etc and there wern't any other problems.

It takes less than a minute to pull in and check, I know I would have done, perhaps thats just me though.

for anyone that is interested see this

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/tyne/4774720.stm

it would seem that the person I saw in the passengers seat was in fact the driver.
I hope he is ok and I would not wish that on anyone.

In resopnse to iCraig now is the time for me to help with the situation and inform the police as to what I saw. As this is the best way for me to help him.
