My grandad is going to insure me on his car by the end of the week so i can go out and have some practice, were wondering whether my mate who past his test last month will be able to take me out in it ?

is there any time you have to wait after passing your test to take someone out to learn ?

as far as my knowledge knows i can go out with my friend as i have insurance and he has a full license, but wouldn't surprise me if you had to have had your license for couple of years before you can teach someone

minimum 3 years driving, 21, and most importantly, must be in a fit condition to drive themselfes. So no driving your parents home drunk!

On a related note, i've always wondered - does the experienced driver need to be insured to drive the car? (as well as be over 21 and +3 yrs experience)

yes, they need to be able to take over driving the car, fully legally, so therefore would need to be insured.

You are also not legally allowed to use the phone without a hands free kit.

If they have DOC on their own policy can they take you out?

Yes, if they are covered to drive your car on their policy then thats fine. The basic rules are that to be sat next to a learner driver teaching them you have to be in a fully legal state to be sat in the driving seat at that moment

how is that at all relevant?

did you know you are not allowed to drive under the influence of drink and drugs :p

the passenger! If you are THE PASSENGER teaching someone how to drive you are subject to the exact same laws of the road relating to the driver. Legally insured, able to drive, under no influence of drink or drugs, no distractions due to mobile phones, etc...

what?!

the passenger is not allowed to use a mobile phone while accompanying a provisional driver?
really?!

actually, in hindsight, this is actually a very good idea.. the last thing you want when your kid is driving off a cliff is to be on the phone, thus not being able to turn the wheel..
you > me ;)

While I can't point you in the direction of that being a legal requirement, I'm almost totally sure he's right. In the same way your driving instructor would never be on the phone while he or she was meant to be instructing you.

If you read through the legislation here:

http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2003/20032695.htm

The bit that you are interested in is:

(3) No person shall supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using -
(a) a hand-held mobile telephone; or

(b) a hand-held device of a kind specified in paragraph (4),

(4) A device referred to in paragraphs (1)(b), (2)(b) and (3)(b) is a device, other than a two-way radio, which performs an interactive communication function by transmitting and receiving data.

during my actual test, the translator's phone rang, and it had some custom ringtone. the examiner was intrigued by this, and then proceeded to have a look at the phone, and they had a conversation about it for ages.. i think the instructor, who goes with you on tests and sits in the front, probably joined in too..

proabably goes to explain why they're such bad drivers in belgium..
wouldn't have that here in the UK would you :p
