Might be a stupid question but, if I put a Saxo VTR engine and wheels and badges on a VTS and thus making it a VTR can I sell it as a VTR and will the new owner be able to insure it as a VTR? They have the same engine size and it doesn't say anything on the log book about what model it is. Other differences are ABS, passenger airbag and alarm but these were options on the VTR anyway.

Just asking as I'm buying a VTS today and having the engine and wheels off it, if not then I'll just break it for parts as no-one would buy a VTS with a VTR engine due to insurance issues!

No, you can't. The VTS will be classed as a modified car, and insurance will be a right pain. As will the VTR if you put the VTS stuff on it.

Keep them standard, flog the VTR and drive the VTS. Transplanting a VTS engine into a VTR seems a tad pointless.

The VTS is a bit rough cosmetically and in a naff colour so wouldn't really want to drive it. It's also older, could do with a new exhaust and needs tax

Then get a cheap exhaust, whack 6 months tax on, tidy it up a little and sell on as an 'ideal first car'.

Converting it will just leave you with an untidy car, with the wrong engine, that's difficult to insure and has no matching numbers, as Fox correctly says :)

Surely that would defeat the object of buying it :p And what ideal first car has group 14 insurance ;)

I'll probably break it for parts ;)

Ah sorry, I skimmed the bit about you looking at buying it :)

Couldn't you find enough cheap bits to put it back together? Nicer to flog off the whole thing in one hit, make a little project of it too :)

I'm not just buying it for making money, theres not THAT much money to be had out of it. I just want the engine and wheels :p

btw just in case anyone is questioning my sanity.

It's £900 for a 2000 V reg VTS with 45k and fsh but no MOT or TAX, has dent in passenger door, lock damage by attempted theft, has decat so wont pass MOT and owner needs to sell it TODAY hence the price.

My car is mint, seriously like brand new with 25k miles. I wouldn't find a saxo like this again for under £4k probably especially a VTS.

I could sell my engine for £300, my gearbox for £150, my wheels for £150, stereo out the vts for £100, interior out the vts for £100, driveshafts for £50 each. Thats my £900 back already then theres all the panels, rear beam, glass, suspension, brakes, airbags etc which could pay for say new engine mounts, new cambelt, new rocker covers etc to make sure its mint when in my car.

I've never had problems with transplanting same manufacturer parts from one car to another. I have a 1992 engine and box in my 1983 car, and because they were a direct fit, and from the same manufacturer the insurance company didn't care :) The VTR/VTS issue might cause a slight increase because of a power change, but the paxo is designed to take both, so shouldn't be a big issue unless you need a new insurance company :)

Looks like a good buy from the saxo owners club this :) However, he says it aint been run properly for 16 months, that sounds a bit sus and he states it needs a "tune up"?! Make sure the engine is in good nic then buy it I say. As your car, is as you say mint and quite a rare nice colour, i think your idea of a engine change is spot on mate :)

Will have to tell insurance company of the engine changes to both vehicles though sadly, but I like your thinking. Basically a free VTS transplant. Cant go wrong tbh if engine is good.

Yeah thats only thing im worried about that it hasn't been run in a while. I'm suspecting it will just need engine flush, oil and filter change, tappets are hydraulic so they shouldn't need adjusting, maybe running rough due to decat messing up lamda reading. Dunno will have to see.

It also helps that I will be able to do the work myself, only tricky bit will be soldering the wiring looms together but not impossible.

If he HAS to sell it TODAY then offer him less!

The price is not an issue, its stupidly cheap and has about 5 people interested but I'm the most local so have the most chance of snapping it up.

Buy it mate, then decide what to do, its £900, thats nothing compared with what it is potentially worth.

Sounds like a cheap way to a quick little sleeper project to me and you want to do it. DO IT!!!

Put £850 cash in your pocket, go over there and offer him £750. Show the cash to him. If he HAS to haggle you up then you will still get it for £850 almost guaranteed, you know what people are like when they see the greens.

I did that with my first car, could only get 950 quid out, so that's what I went with - asking price was 1200. Got it for 950, winnar!

Was sweating buckets by the end of it..."come on mate, we're haggling over 50 quid, it's neither here nor there!" ;)
