career change

I can totally empathise with you with regards to what is available. My IT experience seems to be working against rather than for me. I have been out of work for about 4 months. I have applied for simple 1st line positions only to be told I am over qualified, and I'm just falling short for 3rd line/managerial roles....frankly it stinks!
The area isnt brilliant for oppurtunities, and as such exposure to different systems is limited. I know I have a proven flare for the work, but employers arent prepared take a chance given the current economic climate, so the slightest lack of experience becomes a monster hurdle.

A career change definitely seems to be on the cards, but this is quite a daunting prospect given the lack of employment opportunities and having spent the past 12 years working in IT.

Even 'hygeine operatives' need qualifications these days! ;)

13/14 hours?

What sort of IT is that? IT is quite broad really.

I work for a hedge fund and work strictly 7.5 hours a day doing really interesting and challenging work, directly with the business.

Perhaps it's not a change out of IT, but a change within IT, or perhaps the type of company you "do IT" for which is needed?

usual day i get up at 6ish and get home 7-8pm

i do anything from pc/laptop/server repairs, networking, a/d, exchange and general windows/software fixes etc etc

the problem with IT is its hard enough getting a job especially if you plan on moving to an area you have no previous experience or certs in :(

i'm after recommendations for good careers to pursue and i dont mind putting in the time and money

iam trying to get out of IT and into finance, finding it very hard agencies keep offering me roles in IT, i keep telling them i dont want to do IT no more.
You need to sit down and think about it, a career in IT is so different from anything else and very hard to get out of.

I am in the same boat with you guys and I hope I can calm down and relax from the misery over Christmas. I've been working with Macs for 6 years doing 1st line support and hands on stuff over a broad range. I want to get out of the poxy company I work for as it had gone bust twice. This time it is me+boss but I was asked to go self employed to start with on very basic wages with the situation improving once we got going, things are not really going!

Applying for more IT work is a nightmare, you cannot apply for advanced roles with everyone wanting MS qualifications and skills, and the first line support roles I apply for do not want to seem to want me either, not even bothering to call or e-mail back. One role I got a call back said I was about right if I had been dealing with PC's as well but they were unwilling to train me despite the fact that most knowledge I have is transferable. I'm not earning enough to go out and buy a course either. I like my IT but with no qualifications and only Mac experience I am a bit stuffed, it doesn't help not being in a city either!

I am applying to get out into administration roles or other simple jobs (supermarket even) to get out and get my brain free to retrain or whatever. I quite fancy a crack at becoming an accountant, but again try paying for a course on minimal wages or getting a job without being on a course.

been doing the odd few days of manual labour and it seems so much easier working 9-5 and so much less stressful just not a career i wanna do.

i'm currently trying to snowball a few ideas of possible career routes before i research them further
