Career In The Army part 2 (Hopefully)

I did ask if a degree would enough on the online thing, he said he isnt sure about an installation tech, but he said a degree with no gcses will be unlikely to be able to be a officer (my degree is mainly IT, with 1 maths courses that is about GCSE level, but it lacks english/history/science courses, which im guessing is why its not enough for an officer).

he did say though that to get a better answer i would have to go to an AFCO place, which i may do in the last year of my degree, ive got 2 or 3 years ahead of me still, so im not goign to see them in person just yet.

It does sort of suck that even though im studying a degree, i could be missing out on things like being an officer just because i dont have a couple of gcses.
Yeah, I would say what jdickerson said. You've got a few years to go, in which time you could fit in a GCSE or two. I'd say go to your AFCO/ACIO and see what they say. Being an officer wasn't about GCSEs or anything, it was about degrees, and the fact your wokring towards one now should be anought for a ** technician(techies are the top job, so if your going for it, be prepared to be hated..... I am :p)

Do them :-)

Like you said you have 2-3 years to go, and I'm sure you could easily do GCSE Maths/English - which is all you need I think.
Im studying for my degree with the OU, and they dont do GCSEs, so if i was to do them, i would have to find some place compleatly seperate.

I would have thought that the reason the army may turn down degree people who lack GCSEs is that unlike non-officers who work a specific job, im guessing officers have a much wider range of tasks they have to carry out.

Even if i was an officer in the signals, wouldnt i just manage the instalation techs and such instead of actully doing the hands on installation and maintaining myself (Which is in my opinion a downside to being an officer, as i would love to get some hands on experience with setting up and maintaining networks). I could be wrong at what sort of stuff officers in the signals actully do on a day to day basis though compared to enlisted people in the signals, because the army jobs site seems to lack a lot of detail about officers, other then better pay, and requires more qualifications.

I applied around this time two years ago. It took around 2 months to go through selection and to be given my starting date. I turned down my offer of a place in the Royal Signals as an Information Systems Engineer and decided to go back to college and get that side of life finished while I was still young.

I did intend on reapplying when I was finished with college and uni but right now it's really not what I want to do and my views have changed quite a lot.

You'll enjoy selection though, it's fun :p (I'm not being sarcastic it's actually good)

Hi, you could do them with a local college, evening classes, or at home (like your OU work) using learndirect or ICS.

I was really interested in joining the RAF before i went to uni in the intelligence corps.

That interest has reignited for some reason over the last few months....

Not sure id be good enough to go in as officer though

Can anyone explain how different real army life compares to the TA?
Obviously you have manditory deployment but how does the training compare, the TA was honestly a bit of a picnic from what I saw...

Saw where? First hand?

The last time I timed myself I got 11:30, but that was in boots lol. My last time I timed myself in trainers, I was getting about 11:00 but that was a while ago now. Need to re-time myself. What I'm going for mind you I need to do it in less than 14:30 technically lol.

boo join the air force :D

J/k but seriously if you have any questions about military life just ask away, i may have only been in a while but im sure i can be of some help :)

Since late January this year i have been getting myself fit ready for a career in the Army. And today for the first tiem in my life I feel like im physically fit and ready. I went for my run today along the canal and i timed my 1.5 run and done it in 9min59secs which im really happy with as i had to do it in 10mins30secs :) As soon as i got in i went on the army website and filled out the online applicatin form and ill be hearing from them withing 10 days :)

Good to see you making the effort to get fitter before joining up, I did exactly the same as you before joining the RN. You'll be suprised the amount of people who don't tho

To be honest though Bakes, no matter how fit you are, you'll end up fitter. The PTI's make sure everyone is working their hardest, and if they catch someone loafing then then don't do it again ;)

Good luck! :)

Do not join the Infantry. It can be a good life, but promotion is slow and competition fierce. I recommend that you join a technical trade as that will give you far better career prospects outside the Army, which is really what you must constantly think about. It's only a 22 year job, once you've done your time you'll need to find another career.

I also suggest you save as much of your salary as you can and buy a house as soon as possible. Then rent it out and let someone else pay your mortgage. I really regret not having done that when I was younger, so learn from my mistakes!

Either the Royal Signals, Royal Military Police or the Royal Engineers would be my suggestions.

If you need any advice or help then don't hesitate to get in touch.
