Career in the Forces? (IT Related)

if you do join the RAF be prepared to fall into the trap, of coming into work till 10 then going on NAFFI break till bloody lunch, coming back in at 2 wondering around for a bit hands on hips before deciding you best go back to the block for a kip xD :). Worked with 'em, never bloody saw 'em, they are more ninja than the bloody SAS

So what are the negatives of the job? :D

Lots of vitriol being directed at TG4 (especially the OM's and ex TG11) by the aircraft techs (mainly TG 1). The RAF ICT Technician stands up as a trade on 1 Apr 09.

TG4 has been high pay band since the Trade amalgamation with the exception of the SAC's.

Andr3w, as an OM, you obviously know you have to fill certain criteria (Q-OPS being the main one), time as an SAC, TAT's, the distance learning package NVQ etc?

Judging by your location, are you on 30? Bleedin' siggies. ;)

TATs and "combat ready" training, comical.

Nope, but maybe, as you know everyone has to complete TAT's (to get to SAC), Q-OPS is trade specific, and is for 'combat ready' training. I suppose the closest to that is IRT, specific to the threatre you are deploying to. And you ought to know that I suppose being on a formed unit. ;)

thanks very much, doing a spot of pre christmas dutys at the moment finish on monday :), have a good one (extends to all the forces blokes/blokettes on 'ere)

Well i would like to know if RAF ICT specialists get any sort of choice of which area of ICT they will be doing, because ICT is a big subject. In the army the royal signals have multiple ICT trades instead of just the RAFs ICT specialist, so at least in the signals you have some sort of choice (even then though, the trades in the signals cover huge areas too). Reason i want to know this is because things like being a network admin would realy interest me and i would love to do it, but being a communications system op (using radios, sat comms etc...) would be much less interesting to me.

Also the armed forces websites don't give much info about the trades at different ranks. They give a description of what trades will do in general, but they dont give much info as to what sort of work they will be doing fresh out of trade training, and what sort of work they will be doing as they progress through the ranks. I know that the higher ranks take on more management type tasks, but surely they must also progress onto more technical equipment/skills (for instance they proberly wouldnt let the lower ranks design network infrastructure).

Sorry to quote the whole thing, the Signals have a seperate trade for radios/satcomms etc etc, so you wont find yourself doing that, the two ICT based trades in the signals have now merged forming CS engineers, yes making it broader, but you will definatly have the chance to do the bits you prefer, depending on what regiment you go to and what systems they have, you can pretty much choose which courses you want to go on, and what system to maintain, the scope is there to do what you like :)

I love the attitude of some SAC Techs, the "circle of power"... WTF? What power exactly? As if it is a rank up or something... scrotes!

Lol, well... the main thing that annoyed me was finding out that bloody PSF people have got onto the High paybandBEFORE US...seriously wtf is going on...they never do anything

I'm hoping to get into the RAF as an aircraft technician(mechanical), I was thinking about an ICT specialist and they said I would be fast tracked in if I chose it. I've done my aptitude test and I scored really well but I need to phone my local AFCO back with my career choice on the 5th of January, excited :D

Why do you not want to be fast tracked in?
