Carjacking pro

Lol, are you worried you will accidentally take a wrong turn into south Africa?

I can't believe that anyone actually does this, it's absurd.

I wouldn't go as far as absurd. Maybe I should remove that line from OP about locking doors. Didn't realise it would cause such a stir (I did actually.. as it's GD :D)

The chance of your being in an accident are much more likely and I'm not aware of any safety measures. If they do exist they may not always work.

If your car automatically locks, it will (or at least, should) automatically unlock in the event of any sort of collision. Same as most modern cars automatically put the hazard lights after a crash.

Always used to lock the doors when I lived in Jo'burg (or the car would do it automatically), never felt any need to in the UK though and neither my Astra nor my current Mazda do it automatically anyway.

Yep, I know of a few people who have had their handbags stolen whilst waiting at traffic lights.

That is why I don't leave my handbag where .......I mean I don't own a handbag but surely makes sense not to leave a hangbag where it is easy to steal.

Not sure about most other cars, but all the ones I've owned will unlock the door when you pull the door handle, so it makes no difference there.

Controlled by an electrical system, prone to failure if your battery gives up or the relay or whatever. You can't predict what will happen when you bin the car.

I mean sure there are failsafes, but I don't trust em.

That E46! Nooo!

BMW system is mechanical along with many other makers I presume. If you pull the door handle from the inside regardless of whether the car has the battery connected or not the door will open. BUT if you lock the doors with the key fob when leaving the car the doors will not open at all so if someone smashes the window and pulls the inside handle they will get nothing.

My car will auto lock after driving off but won't auto unlock when stopped, you pull the handle twice to open the door. This can be customised at a dealer...

You are FAR more likely to become trapped in your car after an accident if you lock your doors than you are likely to be 'car jacked' in the U.K.
People who lock their doors in fear of being 'car jacked' in the U.K are so far removed from reality it's worrying, bordering on paranoia!! :-/

I'm confident nobody will ever try to car jack me. :p

At least not while I have this car. The car in front and behind is almost always faster and more valuable.

To be fair, (possibly exaggerated/untrue anecdote incoming) I used to know a guy who claimed that one night while driving home he stopped at some traffic lights and some random guy just opened the door and got into the passenger seat of his van, then proceeded to make threats etc "take me here/there etc."

The guy I knew said that although he didn't obviously have a weapon or anything it was still quite a nasty situation. In the end I think he said that he remembered he had a stanley knife in the doorwell pocket thing so he just pulled over and whipped it out (the knife :p) and told the guy to get out

Still don't trust it man, it's for so little benefit, if they're got a weapon I'm going to comply, it they don't I'm going to punch them in the face and tell them to kindly urinate while leaving.
