Over at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, going on as this is typed, John Carmack is showing off id's secret new game engine. MacRumors.com is reporting that Carmack took the stage and showed off the engine for the first time.

The demonstration apparently showcased an "insanely detailed world" made up of 20GB of textures. Carmack says developers will have an unprecedented level of flexibility when building things with the engine. Textures can be manipulated until the cows come home with little to no performance hit. Carmack also said he can "build game first, then throw artists at it," although it is unclear at this time exactly what is meant by that.

The demonstration was put together in just 10 days. id will be showing off more of the engine at E3 next month. We'll have more information on this new technology as it surfaces.

Story is in IGN, the comments have swearies so took link out

ok 2 things, the first is, why preview it at a mac conference?
Also 20Gb of textures!!!!!! Think we all know where this arguement is going to go.

Do people still care about what 'Carmack' does these days? All the hype over Doom 3 and it was a load of rubbish - both the game and the engine.

Interesting to see what they mean by 20GB of textures... Loaded into one environment, available in the game, what?

Either way, I'm very interesting - Doom 3 may not have been my cup of tea, but ID are bloody good at making efficient and detailed engines.

Nobody. I just care about the games. The 'Carmack' hero worship bull **** is scary :)

He's pretty much the best engine programmer there is, that's why he's revered.

That being said, Unreal is looking better at the moment, and it's certainly a more popular engine to work with.

who do you care about then?

Framerates of course on the xbox360 of course:p

Personally i loved the doom3 engine myself, thought it was very well done. Anything done by Carmack i always pay attention to as hes one of the best, if not the best programmer out there bar none.

um who is carmack?

never heard of him....

He is the programmer behind the 3D world.

He has been the lead developer on the Wolf3d Doom Quake, QuakeII QuakeIII and DoomIII engines

Without his contributions to gaming we would not be seeing the sorts of graphics we see in games today. IMO he is one of the most important figures in Gaming history.

Basically a legend (and uber nerd)

I doubt he played Doom 3 before it was released because if he had, it would have been sh**-canned. Has to be one of the most disappointing games ever released when married together with the hype and level of expectation.

Treat with a pinch of salt..

ID are no longer Game makers per-say, When John Romero worked there they were at the top of the field where Game development was concerned from a graphical technical and for the time story pov.

Since the Quake engine sold so well to other games developers they have really been building games to showcase their games engine and not focused on having as polished a game. Which is a bit disappointing to be fair, but at the end of the day they are sticking to what strengths they have.

The money is in the Licensing of the games engine not the distribution of games.

Because its OpenGL and not DirectX, so good for cross-platform.

Is it really? i thought he was moving over to Directx with the xna etc. I remember him saying the 360 was going to be his dev platform for the future.

Doom 3 was a good game, people who didn't enjoy it, just didn't play it right :p Dark room, sound up, no duck tape mods, clean underwear.
And despite what you may think of the game/gameplay/storyline etc, the Doom 3 engine looked great. Quake 4 is also testiment to that.
Carmack has a name and reputation he has earned, and quite rightly so. Personally i don't worship him or that, but i do respect what he has to say, and any technology he shows off, is going to be nice.
I am wondering if it is a coincidence that EA where there talking about a lot of gamers starting to use macs now. And Carmack came on with EA, hmmmmm conspiracy?

The gameplay is not his responsibility. You can, however, thank him for the real time lighting.

both the game and the engine.

C'mon then chap, explain your reasoning. Doom 3's engine was fantastic - very efficient real-time lighting and shadowing showcased in games with minimal performance loss - it was brilliant at what it did. Even seeing the same engine in Quake 4 and ET: Quake Wars shows how versatile it is - especially for such an old engine!

Who cares how technically clever a game engine is? Geeks? Doom 3 looked like crap with low res textures etc. compared to 'less sophisticated' games like UT 2004. Carmack is living off past glories. I refuse to join the cult of Carmack but if others are sad enough to want to then go ahead :)

The Doom3 engine was bloody brilliant, the game itself wasn't that bad, it was overshadowed by Half-Life2 though (and fairly so).

I don't know about the whole XNA/360 bits but I do know that if it wasnt OpenGL he wouldnt be showing it at a Mac conference.

I don't understand all the slating of D3, GFX were/are amazing.

What kind of PC were you playing on, from where I was sitting the GFX were 100% better than UT2004. Textures were great too, not remember the first time you saw the fat man?
