Carmack Shows Off New Engine

Is it full of holes? :) Carmack = overrated engines and overrated games, living off past glories like Quake 3.

Yes, it is. Giving a subjective opinion (saying UT2004 looks better than D3) does not quantify as evidence when discussing the technical ability of an engine.

The difference is that I care about what a game looks and plays like. Geeks care about how 'technically clever' the 'engine' is. Do you think the average gamer gives a toss about 'engines' and other technical terms?

Tell me - what the **** are you arguing about?

We're discussing the engine - there's no game on discussion here! Either discuss the technical ability of the engine, or leave!

Christ, talk about arguing for arguing's sake...

Probably not :) At least until they've seen the difference and had it explained to them which is which; then they might.

So then - do you not think the same about a good background engine VS a poor one?

I think its fair to say we have all "seen games running at 60 vs 30" you have explained this about 1 million times.

Everyone that cares raise your hand

So the average gamer would need to be told which is which?

the average gamer would also notice nice lighting and bump mapping, over poor lighting and high textures.

Forza 2 is 60fps, it doesn't feel any smoother than PGR3 though. Forza2 is actually quite slow at times, certainly doesn't feel like you are doing 60mph etc...

The gamers care indirectly. The technical brilliance of an engine affects what developers can do with it. And the gamers will care about the games they come up with.

Carmack is the god of creating engines for games, there is nobody better than him at what he does.
I'd argue Tim Sweeney is. The Unreal Engines seem more fully featured than id's engines. More advanced tools and better support too. Although aspects of the Doom3 engine I'm sure are superior to that of the Unreal Engines (hard to compare because UE2 is a bit older than D3 and UE3 is quite a bit newer) but I think UE is a better overall package.

We would still have gotten here. One man doesn't make that much difference.
Perhaps, but it doesn't change that it was actually Carmack who did these things. For that he does deserve respect from the industry.

Still digging yourself into these holes I see, dirtydog :p

D3 was a good game and very very pretty to look at as well. And of course it had the technical elegance underneath to back it up. The engine was practically written by one man - whereas most others like Unreal are done by a whole team.

I don't subscribe to the whole "omg Carmack!!11one" religion either but it is interesting nonetheless to see his latest work or opinions every now and then.

I respect him for his work and dedication but he is not the god who saved gaming.

I suppose the thing is is that he did what any dedicated games programmer could do at the time - he just did it first. But that's not a good reason to take any glory away from him - for all we know, if he didn't do it when he did, it could have been 5 years later that the first FPS game with a slope was invented - there-fore it'd be 5 years later we got Half-Life, Crysis, or MoNkeE's_Generic_FPS!

He was the god who started it all off.

Ken Kutaragi, Peter Molyneux, Itagaki, all those guys with big mouths... they haven't got a patch on Carmack.

this thread is worthless without pics or vids...

It got lost amongst all the bickering, but my post at the top of page 2 has a link to a video on the apple site here.

Apparently it's also on YouTube too, but I don't have access to that site at the moment as I'm at work.
