Carpet Underlay.

Superficial;26221173You get what you pay for and I have hands on experience with both types for over 2 years now. Sorry but I'm simply not one of these types that needs to be right on the internet. My opinion is based on direct experience take it or leave it. [/QUOTE said:
As i stated earlier, i had 5 years with the Treadair and when i removed it it was flat and also crumbling in quiet a few places.
I've had 5 years with the Cloud9 and it still feels great,so with 10 years combined experience of the 2 i'd still state that with a good quality carpet Cloud9 is the better.

Thanks for your opinion.

I believe all experiences are valid.

I think I will be going for the Wilson Underlay 42 Oz, it seems good enough for my needs and is a decent price.
Thanks guys for all the contributions.

I am also looking for some carpet underlay online, definitely not buying from the shops! Just can't believe how cheaper it is online, just taken a look at trade price company you guys mentioned and I also found this company http://www.underlay4u.co.uk/carpet-underlays.html has anyone bought from Underlay4u? I am tempted to buy the thick underlay Dreamwalk 11mm, but not sure if it will cause me any issues with the thickness? can't decide

I think there are cheaper places online, but I went for Tredaire Colour RED. Not the cheapest but but no dead patches after a year. Seems really good on a concrete floor.

Another vote for Cloud 9 here. We moved into our house about 8 years ago, and replaced all the carpet and underlay over time using Cloud 9 Super Contract 10mm. The front room was the first we did, and we recently replaced the carpet due to a leak. I only swapped the part of underlay that had water damage, the rest was (almost) as good as the day I laid it - still springy even the 4 person sofa had only made a slight impression. We've used it on concrete floors downstairs and wooden floorboards upstairs, and I've no complaints so far. Purchased from eBay and fitted myself.

Cloud9 11mm is my go to since I first used it

In fact when I moved out of the council flat we were in and they said they were removing the carpets I tore them up and took the uderlay with me!
Reused in next property and was as good as new :)

I went with the Wilson underlay under an Axminster carpet throughout the house. The fitters said that it was very good underlay but that they don't see it get used very often at all. They said it's the sort of thing that they used to fit in top end hotels.

With being wool, it seems to insulate really well. Our house feels warmer since we've had it done.

My only problem with it is that it isn't perfectly uniform so there are slight lumps. Barely noticable though.

Having bought new carpet and underlay for the very first time recently I would certainly advise not going too deep on the underlay. Certainly below 10mm.

My opinion is that the higher the density the better. I went with Carpenter Richstep underlay which is 9mm thick and 125kg/m3 in density. All the carpet shops/fitters in my area use that brand for some reason. It seems decent stuff, but in hindsight I would have gone even denser. Powerstep is denser for the same thickness and Ultrastep even more so.

I went for Tredaire Sensation, 11mm PU foam very high density, 145kg/m3 still feels the same as the day it went down. My father in law was a carpet fitter and he said higher density is better for the carpet but its a trade off with underfoot comfort. Might try Kensington Deluxe by Tredaire next for the stairs as thats 227kg/m3.

I’m about to carpet my loft room/mancave. Soundproofing is important as it’s about the bedrooms and I’d like to keep warmth in (although the floors and ceilings are really well insulated now so it’s probably less important)
Would cloud 9 or Wilson be best?
