Carragher

He was reacting to abuse from the crowd not inciting the crowd.

Like Youstolemyname says footballers are human too and i'd bet that 99% of people here would have reacted in atleast the same way to having beer thrown at them and being spat at regardless of the verbal abuse he was getting.

yes that line of argument is so thin in my view. people all too often say that we would all do the same in the circumstances. firstly maybe we wouldn't - because we place the event in its context. he is essentially at work, not in his personal life. i know i cannot react the same in the two; i hence have to adapt to certain rules (formal, informal, silent). the cost of not doing so is serious sanction. serious sactions must be relative to the individual.

fans are at leisure. sure they are wrong here, but it is not a simple cause and effect matter. footballers are paid well - and part of the rationale behind such rewards is tied to the exposure they recieve. hence it is a given that their pay is rooted in obsessive fans, which as a by product creates such abuse. in short carragher should not have reacted regardless.

So if you were at work and somebody insulted you, chucked beer over you and spat at you, you would just walk away? I certainly wouldn't.

hehe. not that i particularly care what happens either way here but do you think that neville didn't receive abuse from the liverpool fans before he incited them? even esteemed members of this forum and liverpool supporting mods enjoy giving neville abuse.

They more than likely did insult him but i'd imagine that most people didn't have any real problem with what he did and wouldn't if any other player done the same. The only reason why he was punished was because of it being in a high profile match.

And not that it matters very much, according to another group of Luton fans Carra ignored the insults and didn't react until the beer was thrown and he was spat at.

well as i said, not fussed either way. he probably shouldn't have done it but if someone threw beer or spat at me then i'd have done worse. I'm not a multi million pound footballer though with the incumbent responsibilities that brings so i don't know what i'd do in those circumstances so i won't judge.

^Oh please, Cantona went ape **** and assaulted an opposing fan who gave some verbal during match, Carra had a few harsh words after been spat at and beer thrown towards him during warm down, the two incidents are in no way comparable.

Footballers have to shut up/ignore abusive, threatening and poor behaviour when signing autographs for some kids because they get paid a lot of money?

Hardly, its the Luton fans that should be taken to task for the abuse rather than someone giving them a piece of his mind. There should be more people like Carra having a go at asbo yobs in this country.

I don't agree that his comment was stupid. It was a fair point.

No it wasn't. He commented on a player who was suspended for assaulting a fan. We're talking about someone here who incited the crowd. What Cantona did was worse, I wasn't the one comparing them. Of course, you hate Cantona...

Either way, Carragher should be punished for inciting the crowd, which it clearly was.

Inciting the crowd by signing autographs, he should be locked up.

I think people supporting Man U would be hypocritical to say anything about Carragher. A bad word wouldn’t of been said about Cantona I’d imagine!

I'm a United fan, I find it hillarious, it makes it funnier somehow when they cant take the joke. I dont think violence in football is right, but seeing cantona lose his rag and fly kick someone in the face from the sidelines to like 3 rows back will always stick in my mind and make me grin as well the image of carragher trying to fight 3 scouser look-a-likes from the Fastshow.

Inciting the crowd?

This was after the game, he was signing autographs for young kids and chatting to them, when he starts getting verbal abuse, beer thrown on him and people spitting on him. He faces up to them without actually physically attacking them and he's in the wrong? You sir, are having a laugh.

You should be punished for inciting the forum! :p

Nokkonwud needs a reality check. Don't believe all you read in the Sun, especially when it comes to Liverpool FC!

Luton fans, who were eye witnesses to the events after the match, say that Carragher was signing shirts and autographs during the warm down, when most fans had left the stadium. A group of Luton fans abused Carragher, swearing and with insults to his mother, Jamie was hit with what looked like spit, or maybe beer. He jumped up to talk to them and told them to calm down :) he jumped down again, and was not lead away by security staff. More lies by the Sun, but the truth wouldn't of made the front page now would it?

Anyone that's ever actually been to Luton knows the fans got off lightly.

If taking your shirt off is classed as inciting the crowd, what's scaling a stand to shout in their faces?
Priceless :p

I HATE JAMIE CARRAGHER.

He is my most hated football player.

That is all.
Thanks for that.

That is all.
