Carrick Out?

It hasn’t worked, no.

But the worrying thing is, they’ve decided to stick with a manager who is obviously out of his depth, rather than a previous one who just wasn’t working out.

I'd be all for backing the manager if the manager was actually good.

The manager is the most important person at the club, and Carrick is a very poor one. This isn't an elite manager going through a slightly rough patch.

I don't get it.

Either way, this short term support will soon evaporate when we continue to struggle. It really doesn't matter. INEOS are just going to have more egg on their face and look a bigger bunch of idiots than they already do.

Who would like to join the list!

The club are literally the equivalent of someone who understands the things that they should be doing but not the reason why or the actual thought process behind it.

They are like the fans who constantly point at Arteta as an example of "give a manager time and they will succeed".

"Top clubs have a Dof and they do well"
No, top clubs with a good DoF do well.

"Data driven is the way all the clubs are doing it now, we should do that"
Sure, that is how they do it but the data is just data, its how you use it that makes it useful or pointless

"We need to stop letting the players know that they can't just get the manager sacked when they don't like what hes doing"
Perhaps thats more relevant when you don't have an objectively poor manager eh?

Seems like they were going to sack him but couldn't agree on a replacement in their 'crisis meeting' yesterday. Hilarious.

Does mean that perhaps Howe isn't a guarantee as the next manager, maybe? I doubt we'll be waiting long to find out.

They just keep painting themselves into corners hoping that decisions almost everyone with a brain thinks are bad will work out. Its madness.

Does anyone think this will work? Does anyone think that the players are magically going to work their socks off for a manager they think is in over his head and heading out the door soon. Does anyone at the club genuinely think Carrick has even a joke of a chance to turn this around enough to make sacking him a question?

I get the impression they say all the ‘right things’ to each other, but when it actually comes down to making decisions or imposing actual structure they haven’t the foggiest.

Like, they should be planning for a number of scenarios at the point of taking Carrick on, then reassessing on a monthly basis or even a run of games basis what to do if it all goes pear shaped and based on manager movement elsewhere, such as who is available, who has signed a contract and recalibrate accordingly. That’s as a bare minimum.

What the hell is Jason Wilcox being paid to do otherwise? To quote Roy Keane… that’s his job!

Even if Car-wreck somehow gets a performance out of them for a game or two, the damage is done.

If they sack him from now on they can't backpedal and hire Howe, Conte or Nagelsmann. They'd look even more stupid than they do now.

Honestly, I don't think my view of them will change no matter what stupidity they come out with.

They haven't even backed Carrick really. "We'll give him another game to see if he can turn it around" - pff. That's hardly going to light a fire under the players is it. He's got one foot out the door and they know it.

I know everyone makes a lot of flippant comments about Wilcox being a fraud and Ratcliffe thinking he knows best, but I am starting to genuinely think they are all just in an echo chamber and literally have no clue what they're doing at all.

If they sack him from now on they can't backpedal and hire Howe, Conte or Nagelsmann. They'd look even more stupid than they do now.

But that is exactly what they will do, Wilcox will go cap in hand to Howe and I can't see him turning us down.

It's a total farce. The mind boggles.

A manager who was swimming faster than any other manager in the last 17 games of the season 25-26.

The manager is the most important person at the club, and Carrick is a very poor one. This isn't an elite manager going through a slightly rough patch.

I was never a Carrick supporter but I'm not sure we know how good a coach he is. Last season he was the best in the league in terms of points recovery. This season he's been hit with poor signings, injuries and an exposure of what is a thin Frankenstein squad. Who solves that?

Why were the players having him last season and then not this? I don't think Carrick is a good liar so I tend to believe him when he says that the spirit has been good. I actually just think you are seeing a combination of a very thin squad, a lack of physical fitness (which is on Carrick) and a team that is now constructed of players mostly playing out of position trying to adopt a new more possession based way of playing and it's not working. People forget that what made Amorims Sporting side a success. He binned them all in season one and started from scratch. Which United manager has been afforded that? Instead we've been extending the contracts of Maguire, Shaw, Dalot augmenting that by signing Mount, Antony, Hojlund, Ugarte, Lurching from one coaches to another and adding disparate parts to the monster.

The notion that the board thinks the players need to give more and not just throw another coach at them is a bold concept. You got us in this mess, get us out of it. At this stage in the season you can probably roll that dice. Three wins in a row and you are top 8, The team starts playing with more confidence and maybe something clicks. @fez has consistently said this team is good enough to make top 6. I'm not 100% on that so they have to show something they haven't yet this season but they surely aren't as bad as 17th regardless of the coach.

If I sound like a Carrick apologist its because I'm not convinced there is a significantly better option for the current situation. I can't get excited by Howe. I don't really see how Nagelsman is different from what Amorim offered and he fell out with the Bayern board. Conte - no thanks it would be carnage. Emery - he'd be mad to leave Villa for this mess and there's noway he works with idiot Wilcox.

Realistically he gets until the international break - thats only two league games and makes little difference at this time of the season. Can he make it worse than it was on Sunday?

He was at Boro for two and a half years, and didn't really do anything, then got sacked. His interim spell here was good for 17 games but there was clear evidence of a decline in performances, coupled with some great players digging us out of holes. It all fell very nicely for him. That's not to diminish what he did, but I think we have a decent idea of how good of a coach he is... or well, isn't.

It certainly is a bold - or foolish - strategy. The players know they can just put in a half-arsed performance on Saturday and he'll be out the door. They have been thrown under the bus and blamed by INEOS and I can't see that working out too well... in fact it's pretty crazy!

Saturday will be interesting.

It's quite a good test of who's up for it.
Would be good if it leads to a few being shown the door. Sadly the ones that are always up for it and very professional just aren't that good footballers!!!

Any chance he can turn it round? not really but they are keeping him a little bit longer...... the next international break should be the final nail and another ex player added to the list.

Probably just be the circus we will win every game now

But anyway wonder if Bruno will be playing Saturday? good news though at least we havnt got to wait long its the early kick off.

If you want to know how he actually performed last season, he outperformed xPts by 13 over 17 games. If that happened over a season it would be a 39 point over performance vs expected results.

To put it in perspective, City and Arsenal outperformed their xPts by 7 and 8 last season. Over the whole season. Carricks luck was utterly absurd and he didn’t get those points from United playing well or deserving results.

He’s a poor manager.

The Athletic article this morning (and there’s a survey too!) makes me laugh. Talk of the International break being better for a new manager to bed in. Not that the management have been caught with their pants down for the umpteenth time.

From Reddit:

Key Bits:

- On Monday, sources say there was a conference call between co-owners Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Avram and Joel Glazer, as well as chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox to address the matter and consider options.

- Ultimately, they have decided to see if Carrick and his staff can, with the players, resurrect their form, rather than make a change in the dugout.

- People with knowledge of the situation say that the cost of dismissing Carrick and hiring a replacement was a factor in sticking rather than twisting.

- it would indicate United are not totally sold or unified on the candidates available in Eddie Howe, Julian Nagelsmann, and Antonio Conte.

- There is also the consideration, voiced by some sources, that the international break in less than a fortnight’s time, following fixtures against Roma and Aston Villa, would allow any new head coach the chance to bed in better than now.

- Compensation running into the millions of pounds would be due to Newcastle United as per the terms of Howe’s exit. His salary, and that of his usual assistant, Jason Tindall, are not insignificant in the eyes of United.

- sources say Carrick held a meeting of players and staff — not directors — to clear the air at Carrington and attempt to get people on the same page. The idea was to galvanise everyone to the common cause of winning matches, whatever grievances they might have.

- The summit was said to be productive, but of course the proof will be seen on the pitch at Chelsea on Saturday.

- Carrick has his own decision on Fernandes, whether to back or bench.

- Those who know both men feel they will address the matter head-on, and sources say the mood as things stand is that a line will be drawn after Carrick dropped his captain on Sunday, which would make Fernandes available to start the trip to Stamford Bridge
