Sometimes when I stroke my cat, after a short while it'll suddenly try to bite me, and also whenever it lays its paws on me he'll bring his claws out slightly (enough to hurt me a bit). It's 4 human years old now. are these signs of affection or aggression?

Does he hiss when doing these things at all? Does the hair stand up on his back? Just before attacking you does his tail swish back and forth? - Signs of aggression/getting annoyed usually.

Has his family jewels been removed?

The claws thing, cats tend to do that when they're happy. With any of my old cats if you were watching telly with the cat on your lap or whatever, after a while it would start purring and curl its claws out into your leg. Its pretty normal, irritating like, but normal.

The biting thing is just your cats way of letting you know s/he has had enough of that stroking. They're fussy little buggers. :D

Cats can get bored/fed up with being petted quickly although most give some sort of sign(s) that they are not happy, most frequently flicking their tail but I know at least one cat that does that as a sign of pleasure. Pawing you with claws out isn't necessarily a sign of aggression, it can mean that they are trying to get comfortable or that they feel a bit unstable while sitting on you so want to secure their position. Of course if they are spitting at the time and trying to bite you then you might reconsider whether it is aggression or not.

Basically cats are awkward sods and it's as simple as that.

Paddling is normal, just wear thicker trousers. All our cats paddle, and his claws sometimes extends. ow!

As for biting when petting either playing or getting annoyed, some cats don't like being stroked near the rear legs or tummy.

My cat bites me on the nose to wake me up to feed him every morning. The bad thing is he always does it before my alarm clock goes off.

Family jewels removed - yes

There are no signs (hissing, hair standing up on back, tail waggling, etc).

You are right, cats are awkward creature.
And my cat endorses the saying "As every cat owner knows, nobody owns a cat."

It's perfectly normal. Our cat will bat my hand with her claws out if she's had enough strokes or a gentle bite but it doesn't really hurt, just a warning that she's had enough and to give it a rest :)

My cat used to terrorise me as I was growing up, he would be sitting in the centre of the room and have me literally skirting the outside because he'd attack me for no reason. He didn't really bother with signs too much as he used to go from happy to irate in less time than it takes to blink. However he mellowed after he reached about 10 years old - I still miss the cantankerous old git. :)

One of my cats will gently bite me if she doesn't like something, then lick the same place to say sorry.

Awww that is soo cute :D

If it is a problem then falcon punch, mustard and to the internetfrom us OCUKs should always be considered ;)

Not got a cat 'yet', but with friends cats they can get annoyed if stroked for too long, then just flip and bite down hard. But one of them always asks to be tickled on the belly and loves it on the odd occassion, but goes berserk on others. He's a right baiter :D

One final note, on the tube yesterday a mother sat down with her small child (out of pushchair) whomust have been 3 or 4 next to a blind man and his guide dog. After a inute or so the child jumped down then hugged the dog. Cuter than cute, but taking a pic would probably have looked dodgy :)

A bite usually means one of 3 things.

A) You are annoying me... stop now or die horribly!

b) im bored and i want to play-- NOW!

c) I want something and i want it NOW!

You need to assert your position as the dominant male as he seems to be looking at you like a soft pansy. Throw some meat on the floor and fight him over who gets first dips, you will then know who wears the trousers.

Do you trim his claws? I have an over-affectionate tortoiseshell cat who's claws come out just like that when shes being stroked, hurts unless you have ultra-thick jeans on!

Problem is the foxy bugger goes for me whenever I try and cut her claws.... so it becomes a game when shes sleepy, with long clippers.... and gardening glove :p

my cat does the same thing, shes only 9 months old,

biting thing is normal, she loves biting me when we play and if i curl my hand around her head shes goes mental and darts around the room then pounces on my arm, its well funny to watch!

she used to claw me when we played when i first got her but i told her off and after 2-3 weeks she stopped clawing me.

cats can be awkward sometimes but there so damn cute!

My cat bites my had if she's had enough of being stroked. Also when we're getting ready for bed the cat will come into our bedroom and lay on the bed, when I pick her up and carry her to her room she latches onto my hand with legs & paws and bites my hand :p

sometimes if I walk past her she will grab hold of my ankle and bite it in a playful manner. :p
