Cat life expectancy

My cat's 14 this year and is really quite healthy, people generally don't believe he's actually 14, he's just as energetic as he was when he was a kitten.

He's not as crazy but I put that down to him maturing, he used to go crazy when he saw himself in the mirror when he was kitten for example, now he's learnt that it's actually only his reflection. :p

He gets a cold now and again which means he moaps and sulks for a bit, but they don't usually last more than a few days.

Oh yeah, he's an outdoor cat.

To be honest I would have thought outdoor cats would have lived longer due to them getting more exercise as they're able to run around a lot.

Sadly, my cats departed around a year or so ago. One made it to 16, the other was around 24. I'm amazed the one that lived to 16 made it so far considering he had only 25% function of one kidney and was diabetic. RIP Chancey and Rosie...:(:(

It's feral cats that have a life expectancy of 3-5 years, domestic cats live a lot longer on average whether indoor or outdoor cats.

Our cat made it to 22, just. She was put out most nights and sometimes she chose to go out during the day too, is that classified as an outdoor cat?

My parents first cat was very much an outdoor cat and made it to 24. Their current one is also an outdoor cat and he's now 14 and going strong. Imo it's cruel to keep a cat locked in a house all the time.

My cat (Pickle) took a one way trip to the vet 2 weeks ago :( Broke my heart tbh. Had him since I was 11.

16 years though & on outdoor cat that tried to play with fireworks?!

is op maybe getting outdoor cats mixed up with pedigree cats somehow ? they dont usually live as long

Nope, I just searched for cat life expectancy on Google and a lot of them say around 5 years for outdoor cats.

Your cat isn't greedy, he needs to eat more food because he cannot absorb the nutrients from the food he eats as well as he used to as he's older. Our vet told me today.

Ah, interesting. Thanks.

It must be another country or something, everyone I know who has had cats have let them go outside and they have lived well into their teens.

You’d not be quick enough to get it. :p

no need to be quick. Just hire my assassin dog..AKA "Mad Mutley the mystic Minja" to get the the job done. No pussy is safe.

mine died over the weekend, she was 18 or 19, not entirely sure as we got her from rescue home when she was supposedly 8 but they weren't sure. She'd been ill quite a few times in the 10 years we had her but just faded out in the end, her sister had done the same a year and a half earlier

Life expectancy is the average lifespan for a cat after taking all the environmental factors into account like cars and diseases, it's not the average age of a natural death.

Our eldest cat, Tom is getting onto 18 now. We took him in after his previous owner emigrated to France a year ago and he said he had him since Tom was 6 weeks old and the guy couldn't remember if he was 16 or 17 at the time lol! Anyway he has never been ill at all since the day that we got him, always a tough cat and never takes any slack from any other cats and he loves to eat as much food as he can but he never gets overweight!

But recently he hasnt eaten as much as he does & he has started to take a dump opposite the litter tray if he can't be bothered to go outside but he still wee's inside the litter tray everytime, not too sure why and the tray is always clean & doesn't smell and this is very odd of him to do this. He has done this 3 times now since last week and were starting to think weather it is time to take him to the vets for a check up or not, my gf is worried though incase they might say that he needs to be put down :(

my cat was largely indoors, it went outside when it wanted to and lived til 21, which is pretty impressive. However, my mate's cat was SOLELY an outdoor cat and lived til 24!! She was still pretty fit when it just disappeared one day as well.
