Catalyst 7.7 Released

If you view all the benchmarks you will see the results are all over the place clearly the compiler just isn't working right in DX10 yet.

No wonder DX10 performance in LP and WIC is so crap.

I hope this compiler will start to work, I want to be playing Bioshock in its DX10 glory at lest 800x600 res.

How when those benchmarks clearly show the 2900 is dead in the water as far as DX10 is concerned.

Will you look past that and engage your brain and realise this is clearly driver related. You do worry too much Will. The compiler is the part of the arc and relies on the drivers instructions that organises everything to the GPU as you can see there still tweaking many aspects of the DX10 api. The ones where performance is up on par is how it all should be in the end the ones that are 1fps are clearly not tweaked at all yet. A lot of work to be done.

Well Bioshock is due for release on the 24th of August, will Ati make it time?

From these results I really doubt it. Id expect the card to be running at it's full DX10 capacity by Sep/Oct/Nov (total guess) at a push there is so much work to do I didn't actually realise it was this bad as I don't pay much attention to DX10. Still I'll give Bioshock a go regardless.

I think the problem is though the card was delayed by 7 months and by looking at some areas where its lacking its clear it was still released too early.

I really dunno how ati went from the x1900 series and having top of the line performance to a card that is probably the most controversial in terms of reviews and what site to believe, in a good few years.

Not sure what you mean by this, drivers are always going to need time to improve ATi only released it's DX10 driver model in 7.5 Nvidia have had theres out nearly 1 year. This is clearly a compiler issue not the card. How long ATi will take to fix this who knows I'll certainly be nagging :p

So Bioshock in DX10 is most likely going to be unplayable, hmmm, ATi need to star moving like there a$$ is on fire coz if its octoberish then DX10 performance with this card is going to be a real flop as G92 may be out, so either way, it could end up, me wasting my money but then getting a nice sale on the 2900 for around 150 with G92 is launched due to its DX10 performance suddenly unleashed, if that ever happens.

In the mean time I think my DX9 results in WIC are better than my 8800GTS:

Resolution: 1400*1050
Detail Level: Very High
Average fps: 26
Min fps: 21
Max fps: 38

Thats with 8x*SAA in game and 16xAF, no soft shadows of course, looked well nice and playable.

Can anyone confirm if thats about right for a 2900?

Well the fact is some people are saying it was built for dx10 etc so id expect their dx 10 drivers to be upto par. When the card was released people were syaing wait for dx10 etc, then the call of juarez benchmark was released and it didn't perform too good in it. Saying that though nothing really ran that demo well. I personally think crysis will be the big test, its just possible by the time crysis is released nvidia might have their new high end part out and most likely dwarf the 2900xt dx10 performance no matter how well it fares in crysis. :(

But isnt nvidia always going to beat ati in crysis no matter what becuse the nvidia cards are more tweaked for Crysis.

Sort of like Doom 3, where it ran better on the 6800 rather than the X800 because the 6800 had ultrashadow II.

Been plenty of nvidia branded games that ran better on ati cards. :)

Sort of an annoying situation, if it runs better on nvidia hardware all you hear is "it was optomised for it" if it runs better on ati hardware while being nvidia branded its "driver bugs". :D

read the sir eric demer interview if you havn't already he's already been nagging the driver team for ages to get the dx10 performance up it's going to take a serious amount of time before it's full potential is unleashed by which time I may have already sold the card and moved on. :o
