Catalyst 8.3... A Preview...

Anywhere between a 7-23% loss in performance depending on resolution. So higher res more bandwidth needed and less performance attained. So you could Crossfire a 3870XT in the x16 slot and 3850 in the X4 slot if you wanted to not waste the extra.

I'm actually mulling over selling/trading my GTX for a 3870X2 now, I'd have to give it more thought and pour over some benchmarks and reviews though before I decide on anything final. Nvidia drivers at the moment are simply a shambles for me, and while the hardware offers excellent performance I've had 8800s for dead on a year now and I am bored and want something new to play with.

That was the same way i was thinking , so i sold my gtx oc2 and got this instead ! glad i did it, and wanted to make use of the second pcie slot on my mobo . i was just bored of the same hardware. This is the first ati i have had since crossfiring 2 x 1800 xt's when they were all the rage, crossfire was a bit dodgy then though but i think it was more to do with the motherboards than the cards , hopefully this next go will be a lot better

You're twisting my arm, lol. I'm pouring over every review I can find as we speak. It seems the only game that Crossfire/X2 doesn't scale well in is Crysis but I've nearly finished it now so that's not an issue.

So andyr can you give us any idea of how much better you think the X2 is over your GTX, any areas where it lacks in comparison?

From what I can see the only issue is in games that don't scale well with Crossfire like Crysis.

I'd also like to know if Andy honestly feels the X2 is quieter or louder than the GTX.

Having come from a GTX and a GTS512 I can say that in heavy load 3D the X2 is louder, but not annyoing enough to be of any concern to me.

In 2d the card is silent.

As for Crysis scaling, crysis is VERY picky about the way you have to play it on an X2 (and Crossfire in general).

If I run Vista, 64bit, DX9 I will get 54fps average with my rig (1280x1024 all high).

If I run anything else average fps nosedives through the floor.

I like the look of 8800GT Sli considering how cheap they are now only problem is I have a P5B Deluxe which afaik is none SLI compatible :(

So would mean more outlay and hassle to go that route.

Plus Intel SLi boards are utter poop.

I hope thses drivers turn out to be as good as ppl think they're gonna be or theres gonna be a of disappointed users here, me included.

At the same time as changing the graphics card i went from 22" to 24" monitor so some games i played were straight away at higher res , my gtx was under water and my 3dmark 06 was 15500 @650/2000 where as my 06 score with this on the stock cooler is 20800 with a bit of a clock 904/1050 both at the same resolution, i prefer the colour quality of ati , more pleasing to the eye , i noticed this when i went from the 1800 to the 8800 the colours weren't as vibrant and now i am back on ati the colours are still better in my opinion, even on crysis my average benchmark frame rate went up by 2fps so even that was slightly better, i play c0d4 quite a bit but dont have a frame to frame comparison ,old games like css are loads better and i will be getting myself another to go with this one , going to get another msi as its pre clocked and not much more expensive !

Users are noticing some stalling in certain games were its thought the clocks go from 3d 825Mhz standard to 2d 300Mhz and then back again , i cant say that i have seen this but people have got around it by flashing the bios to run both clocks to 825 or more so it doesn't happen to them, maybe this will be a fix with this next release. just thought i should mention it though as if it happens to you then you might be a bit sick. I dont really think i am a fanboy for either but i love my ati :)
btw i had 3 different 8800 gtx's

Crossfire X is very impressive, I especially like the fact you can crossfire an X2 with a 3870 and it still scales favourably according to anandtech.

Hang on, hold the phone here. Does that mean I could crossfire my Gecube 3870xt 512mb in the 16x slot with a 3850 pro 256mb in the 4x slot?? Surely then both will run at the lower clock speeds on the 3850.....

Put simply, what can I crossfire my 3870xt with on a P35 board?

Well, I've done it. I've put my GTX on MM.

It's been exactly a year since I used an ATI product, should be a refreshing change.

You're tempting me now :p. I play CoD1 still and the GTX (and 8800GT) has a problem with that game in multiplayer (bad lag in close battles and sometimes just firing produces it and fluid movements save lives). My 2900Pro doesn't cut it compared to my GTX in every other title so the X2 is the only move I can make. I'm going to wait a few weeks first to see if it's worth it as I probably could live with the lag for now. Hopefully sell the GTX and the 2900Pro and pay nothing for the X2 :D.

Good luck Ulf and I think from reports that you won't be disappointed as well as having 8.3 drivers looming :D. That driver set alone will help sell ATI cards as it's mighty impressive. If only Nvidia could pull something out a hat like that concerning their driver sets but we all know it's not going to happen any time soon .

I'm ****** off with Nvidia drivers at the moment. I won't get into all the reasons but it's mainly to do with my TV at the moment, can't get 1366x768 to work and some driver sets won't even do the slightly blurry 1360x768.

I might even skip the X2 and go for the standard 3870, depends if I feel like spending or saving really.

No they will run at there own speeds but at 256mb each.

Won't be getting rid of my GTX, the things a trooper just keeps on going. I'll wait until we get next gen until then I'm saving my pennies.

My wallet is still singing that sweet tune :D.
