Catalyst 8.4

Well, only had a brief play with these last night.

Before I go into these though, will say on 8.3's was getting awful system hangs and lock-ups (especially COD 4). On the 8.2's no crashes, but powerplay bug was really a problem (until I OCed in Rivatuner which disables 2D/3D clocks)

With these, performance in Crysis seems fine. And performance in single player cod4 with AA seems a bit better, however it crashed again after my first round on multiplayer - system just froze.

Thought the general concensus was that ATI drivers were better than NV these days? Having gone through an 8800GTX/8800GTS(G92)/8800GT, the only time I really had a problem with those was when I OC'ed too much.

This now seems to be the 3rd set of drivers with issues in a row from ATI. And not minor issues either.

Are you sure it's a driver issue? I've been getting no crashes or anything....also I don't really like CCC, I just install the bare display driver and then use atitraytools (the beta that supports the 38xx series)

When I put on Catalyst 8.2's all the system hangs and crashing went away, so it kind of points to a driver issue. 8.2's only had powerplay bug for me, which was easily overcome.

I will have a better play with the 8.4's tonight. Just the system hang in COD4 last night leaves me thinking will be going back to old drivers again.

Is the official 8.4 release the same driver version as the 8.3 hotfix driver?

Also, does it continue to solve the Powerplay issue like the 8.3 hotfix did?

Well, thats cool. Am sure they work for many. Just wish I didn't have issues with them.

There is probably just something on my system somewhere they don't like, such a maybe a driver for something else, or something. Problem is I ain't re-install windows bit by bit to find out what that might be, if anything :D

Dont get me wrong buddy im not going to claim that they are perfect in all situations, there probably is something, somewhere that is causing the issues who knows? Either way hope you get this sorted!

Hi, I have had no issues with any of the 8.x's whatsoever. Rock solid with gaming, rock solid with 3d benchmarking..

Newer version. It's the same that was posted on Windows Update a couple of days ago incidentally.

The gfx card could be at fault. try under clocking it by 50 or more& see if it still hangs in COD4.

Has anyone got issues with armed assault? I've had problems since I've had an X2, and no driver release has helped.

These drivers seem to be no great shakes (well, stable enough, just no progress since 8.3), and so starts the wait for det8.5 =/

What kind of problems? Also, do you have the latest patch (1.12 beta)?

I installed these drivers last night and played some Trackmania United Forever. Didn't notice any great improvements or anything, but my GPU usage still only reaches around 50% when playing online. However, when I go into the game menus it goes straight back up to 100%. Anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I'd love to get more performance online, as often the FPS drop down to a level where the gameplay isn't smooth, and this makes setting fast times much more difficult.

i think its your cpu that's holding you back, not your gpu.

So I came home last night and saw the updates to this forum and saw they had been released. I ran DriverCleaner, completely wiped the 8.1's which were up to this point the only driver with which I didn't randomly crash out of games, have powerplay issues or strange benchmarks. I downloaded the bare driver, as IMO CCC is a complete load of muck, the overclocking options are fairly useless and you can't view your graphics clocks in-game. The install went smooth and the first thing I did was run 3D Mark (please don't flame for my first choice of items to run, It is just personal preferance, I like a benchmark as proof my system is running good, don't like it? Too bad ^^). I am pleased to report this driver has worked the issues that some people, myself included were seeing with the benchmark and I got a score of 14557 with everything on stock. I then tested Counter strike source & Call of Duty 4. Not only am I pleased to report there is no crashing, however, performance has been greatly improved, I no longer get random FPS dips & AA doesn't seem to be as much of a hog as before, the games run a lot smoother and there is no stuttering whatsoever. I finally tested crysis (not benchmark, just the demo) & was able to run at perfectly playeable FPS with no droops in FPS etc. using 1240 res. and the modded config to allow you to play on "very high" settings in XP. All in all these drivers are great. They are reliable, give you performance boosts and remove all of the issues I've had with so many of the other drivers. Yet I can't help but feel this took ATI a long long time to produce. Thoughts etc. welcomed.

I aint a big fan of CCC either, always used ATI tray tools, but since i got my 3870x2 ive had to use CCC as ati tray tools didnt seem to work with my card properly. Is there a beta version of tray tools or something i can use?

And on topic, hopes 8.4s solve my issues :p

I don't have the beta patch, no...I'll give that a go. I have no text on the menus and the 3D stuff going on in the background is all grey with no detail.

its not just desktop - in-game is at reduced contrast/brightness too at 16xFSAA - any ideas ?

here is a piccie of the "overlay" I get in menus if FSAA enabled ?
