Hi all, tried looking to see if a thread like this would break any rules in here but didn't see anything, sorry in advance if it does!

I got caught speeding doing 99 in a 70 zone. I was an idiot so no need to point that out.

My question is I have a court summons come through looking up sentencing guidelines it suggests it can be up to 6 points and a £1k fine. I'm on 3 points currently, so I'm not at risk of getting a ban and the Summons states I can get a more "lenient" penalty if I plead guilty.

Anyone been in this situation and is it worth contesting in court? The fact I can't get banned leads me toward just pleading guilty but my concern is then being on 9 points and one more mistake and I'm done. I don't normally speed (this 99 was on one of the few duel roads in Norfolk and I was trying to get past multiple tractors/trucks before it went single lane, not an excuse just the facts) but being on 9 points would concern me, would contesting give me any chance at less points?

As I say I was an idiot, no need to point this out I accept his and annoyed at myself for getting in this situation. Just want to know if anyone has had something similar occur?

Thanks.

6 points is almost certain for that speed, tbh if I was in your position I'd have wished I'd got caught going a bit quicker and could get a short ban.

Yeah I drive for a living so that's not an option. I rarely if ever speed (my other 3 points was trusting my sat nab saying speed limit was 50 so travelling 50 but got pinged by a 40 camera which was vexing to say the least!) it's just that day on them horrid roads I made a stupid choice so not too worried about being on 9 points but it is a worry on 9 as a mistake can cost you.

Why wish for a ban ?

Because a ban for say 110MPH would only be a couple of weeks, which you can easily work around. Whereas points stay on your licence for 3 years and can lead to a 6 month ban if you make the same mistake again.

A few weeks ban wouldn't bother me - I'd just get trains and taxis. 6/9 points would take a lot of the fun out of driving for me.

Speak with a solicitor. They'll be best placed to help you mitigate the impact and get you the minimal punishment, but there's no point contesting it. What grounds would you contest it on?

Apologies that's just poor terminology, I mean the likelihood of them reducing the points awarded. I fine I can deal with but I would rather not be sat on 9 points.

Ahhh, I see. Had a few points when I was young and foolish on a bike but don't think I have ever had any in a car.

Seems a harsh outcome either way op! I can understand for idiots who do 60-70 in 30 zones with pedestrians present etc but doing your speed on the Motorway Is only what most drivers seem to think is acceptable in the outside lane nowadays. It hardly warrants so many points IMO.
Get a solicitor and say u had explosive diarrhoea therefore U where rushing home to run the toilet :D didn't Alex Ferguson get off with an excuse like that years ago?
Do insurers really find out about undeclared points though if that's what op gets? I've worked with a few people who claim they have a few points that they have never bothered declaring

Just take it easy out there, I've been on 9 points in the past and it sucks but I've got a clean licence now.

They expire 25/09/16 so will be on 9 (assuming I get 6) for about 11 month.

Just to be clear, when did you get the 3 points? Some people mistake how long points remain on licence for how long they count towards totting up.

This, my understanding is that they stay on your licence for 4 years but you only count the last 3 years for totting up. Based on you saying they expire in 11 months you might be in the clear.

25/09/13. It states on the online site that they expire 25/09/16 and then disappear off the licence 25/09/17.
