Caught Speeding

My mate told me if you do 100 or over now it's an automatic ban so count yourself lucky

"My mate said" :) love it. This is not true, it's completely down to the magistrate on the day. Sure, the greater the speed and difference to limit will increase your chances of an outright ban, but there is no definitive number. There are only guidelines that and then every other factor that they might consider alongside those guidelines.

You've already held your hands up, pointless paying £300+ or whatever it is for a solicitor to save yourself probably £200 in fines. Write a letter of apology (they call it mitigation) saying that the roads were dry etc (if they were) and that it was completely out of character thing to do (may not work too well as you don't have a clean license already! Worked for me though) and that you're very sorry and you don't ever want to go to court again.

I said I was looking at advanced driving courses and my eyes had been opened and as such fuel economy had improved (it actually had). I went from a Careless Driving charge and looking at 3-6 points and expecting £400 in fines to get 3 points and £115.

I'm sending the letter off today, to be honest I'm heavily leaning toward just sending it in and pleading guilty by post with a mitigation letter. Just want to make sure that if the worst case happens and I get a short ban work are ok with it. If they aren't I'll probably lawyer up and do it in court just so I can get across how important it is I don't get a ban.

I just got done for the same speed (well in June), I was already on 6 points, it went to court I would have been happy with a ban to give me a nice clean license, ended up with 6 points and a £750 fine which put me on 12 points but praise be to a deity they didn't convert it to a TT99, so now I have to drive like a saint till the other 6 drop off in December.

Good luck, what will be will be.

Just went past a van today doing a speedo indicated 70 in a 50...

Assuming they wernt having a fag break at the time and I get a letter through the post in the next couple of weeks, anyone have a rough idea what I would be looking at for insurance premium increases?

Did the course already, so cant do that (got caught in exactly the same place *facepalm)

I've just spent the last couple of weeks looking at new (used) cars, decided I want a golf / A3 / Leon with the 2.0l TFSI engine, but may have to re-think that if the points are going to be a game changer on insurance...

70 in a 50 is almost certainly going to be a court appearance.

I got clocked and pulled doing 74 in a 50 at 1am by a unmarked for my last set of points. I was actually lucky, Asked what he got me at he spun the display around, bang to rights.

He used his discression and gave me 3 points, after speaking to him politely and knowing I was at his mercy.

Sucks getting done by a camera or van.

I can never understand how people get done for speeding. I mean I'm not saying drive like a nun all the time and never go above 30mph but hearing the speeds some people are caught at.. Unless you're rushing to hospital / on a motorway I can't understand it. Sure 40 in a 30, 50 in a 40 I can understand but being caught at 74 in a 50 just baffles me.

dual carriageway is 70, mysteriously goes down to 50 for half a mile before a roundabout. Everyone just goes 70 through that bit because its stupid so police put a speed van there. The 3 cars in front of me all would have got done too...

I got court on the way back from Tadcaster a few weeks ago and this gives the speeds in which they'll offer you the course. I do find it a little weird that different parts of the UK give different speeds?

E.g. a friend of mine got the course for doing 33 in a 30.

We all do daft things, mine was on a road that used to be NSL a few weeks earlier so wouldn't of been as bad, but still fair whack over. Empty long road that you can see for some way, but totally missed a black Volvo sitting behind a bush!

Clean licence now though.

Those sort of things I can understand where the sole idea behind it seems to be to catch people out. Have got a stretch of road like that near where I work, it's 40 off of a roundabout, about 1/2 mile of NSL and then 40 again. Doesn't seem to make any sense :o

There is NPCC guidance but it's just that and not all forces follow the guidance strictly.

Ah!
The legendary 33 in a 30.
I bet there is no proof left of this, nothing more than a tale told over a pint in the pub?
Still yet to see any evidence whatsoever that anybody has received a NIP for anything less than 35 in a 30.
Keep on hearing people who say it's happened to them. Keep on hearing about "a mate of mine" but mysteriously there is never any evidence, anywhere, to backup the claim.
If you've got some - friend kept his NIP, has a copy for example? I'd love to see it - you know, have a copy myself to show the many, many others who also have yet to see this evidence.
Otherwise - it was 35 in a 30.

You won't get banned as you're not 30mph over, very close. I was when I got done for 96 in a 60 in the Welsh countryside on a bike. I went to court, and got a £650 quid fine think it was and a 7 day ban. You'll get the points and probably a fine. Although above pictures states it's the courts decision, I didn't believe that yhey can't legally ban you unless driving dangerous??? (or 30mph+ over the allocated limit) and they can't prove that so... take the points, I think personally it'll be 3 points and £300 quid fine or something like that. Tops.

Well work have come back and said a ban (as its max 28 days on the guidelines) is no bother if it does come to that, it's not ideal but I can work from home/nearest office so that's good. Just got to send everything back with mitigation letter then hope for the best!
