Caught Speeding

54 in a 30 got my a ban back in the day. The chap in before me was doing 95 in a 70 on a motorway and got a ban also.

The judges were very ban happy that day.

My solicitor did well to only get me 30 days and no re-take considering I had only had my licence for 5 months.

Thats why you got a ban. Not the fact they were "Ban happy"

Should have made you retake the test Imo

Yeah I can get a ban, looking around people rarely seem to get banned for sub 100 (as long as it doesn't top up to 12 points) but I don't want to risk getting a ban as whilst I would probably "get away" with it at work (as guidelines suggest max 28 days) still not a great position to be in work wise.

Self inflicted so deserve no sympathy but is a horrible blinking situation, I could hire a solicitor but you are talking £500-£800 quid with no guarantee of no ban still.

Got to send the letter back today so just seeing if anyone had similar at similar speeds.

Oh I agree whole heartedly. The solicitor I spoke to had 6 different speeding related cases that day and said that 4 of the 6 ended up with bans.

I pled guilty and accepted it.

Lesson learnt.

No, they were ban happy in those days, certainly compared to now. The guy who bought my old car recently got 6 points for that exact speed.

However, nowadays, magistrates are told not to give new drivers short bans in order to circumvent the 6 points disqualification rule, so if Josh had been caught today he'd almost certainly have got 6 points and had to retake his test.

Yeah when the judge had me standing up in front of him he made it abundantly clear I had been given a touch, if it was 6 points he gave me that would mean a ban and retake due to the length of time I had my licence for.

In the end the court clerk made a balls up on the paperwork, I got a TT99 which was a ban under the "totting up" procedure. Which wasn't the case as I didn't get any points, still hurt my insurance quotes for the next 2 years until I realised.

If you drive for a living and off to court let that be known might help your case.

Absolutely this, a colleague racked up 15 points in one week and managed to keep his license.

They put average cameras in on an nsl stretch of road he used go get go work every morning. 5 NIPs one for each day of the week at almost identical times for identical speeds (68-70) in a 60

Did he not notice the cameras?

Doing that speed I can understand, but the lack of observation is slightly concerning :p

fwiw, I got caught out at 103mph in a battered old mk3 golf about 7 years ago on the M1 southbound near jct 2. I'm sure the car could not hit those speeds and it was the wind plus it being downhill etc.

Hendon Magistrates court is not a nice place and I saw individuals being slapped with hefty fines for driving without insurance (8 points and £800 was the most for a 17 year old on a provisional!)
There was a guy who was caught speeding on the A406 in his Porsche doing 70 in a 40. They gave him 6 points and a fine due to the fact he needed the car for work so that could be worth mentioning.

As I was still in Uni i somehow got away with a 30 day ban and £75 fine. Lucky escape!

Also, do not drive to the court house, as if they ban you, it is effective immediately meaning you can't drive yourself home (cue awkward conversation to my dad explaining whats happened...)

Lesson well and truly learnt!

I was done at 98.7mph in a 70, I plead guilty and attached a letter to my guilty response explaining how it was a one off, needed car for work, etc etc.

ended up with 3 points and £150 fine, which took me to 6 points in total. (first 3 points were due to come off my license that month)

Might be different for 99 - but court was just said to be an option depending on what I replied with - I presume even if yours has went straight to court then you will get to submit something ahead of time.

From my experience and friends experiences - I think in these circumstances if you are not a rat boy/repeat offender/lacking in remorse it can be far more lenient than you would expect.

Obviously speeding is something we shouldn't do etc but we all make mistakes and I can say hand on heart that I have never went much above 70 since I was done (4 years ago) as I have experienced as close as I could have what can happen if I get caught.

6 points is almost certain for that speed, tbh if I was in your position I'd have wished I'd got caught going a bit quicker and could get a short ban.

No it's not... my second speeding ticket was for 99.6mph on the M3

I was stopped by officer and he told my 96-99.9mph was discretionary as to whether it would go to court or not... 100+ is mandatory court.

I got 3 points and £60 fine...

Seems a harsh outcome either way op! I can understand for idiots who do 60-70 in 30 zones with pedestrians present etc but doing your speed on the Motorway Is only what most drivers seem to think is acceptable in the outside lane nowadays. It hardly warrants so many points IMO.
Get a solicitor and say u had explosive diarrhoea therefore U where rushing home to run the toilet :D didn't Alex Ferguson get off with an excuse like that years ago?
Do insurers really find out about undeclared points though if that's what op gets? I've worked with a few people who claim they have a few points that they have never bothered declaring

Yes, the insurer will find out... if you have to claim.

I've had one claim and on the very first call where I was reporting the incident, they did a license check.

I agree with you re: inappropriate punishment for a non-crime.

Only a week ago I popped over the border and did over 170mph legally... I didn't kill any children

Shame the UK is still so backwards in terms of motorway speed limits...

50+mph in a 30mph residential area should be instant ban, however...

He is right the guidelines have changed 25mph over the speed limit goes to court as they are no longer able to issue a FPN.

Just went past a van today doing a speedo indicated 70 in a 50...

Assuming they wernt having a fag break at the time and I get a letter through the post in the next couple of weeks, anyone have a rough idea what I would be looking at for insurance premium increases?

Did the course already, so cant do that (got caught in exactly the same place *facepalm)

I've just spent the last couple of weeks looking at new (used) cars, decided I want a golf / A3 / Leon with the 2.0l TFSI engine, but may have to re-think that if the points are going to be a game changer on insurance...

You've already held your hands up, pointless paying £300+ or whatever it is for a solicitor to save yourself probably £200 in fines. Write a letter of apology (they call it mitigation) saying that the roads were dry etc (if they were) and that it was completely out of character thing to do (may not work too well as you don't have a clean license already! Worked for me though) and that you're very sorry and you don't ever want to go to court again.

I said I was looking at advanced driving courses and my eyes had been opened and as such fuel economy had improved (it actually had). I went from a Careless Driving charge and looking at 3-6 points and expecting £400 in fines to get 3 points and £115.
