Hi there

Some pros tried to steal my car last night. I'm going to install some epic CCTV. What's the best solution?

Things I need:

- High def recording
- Night vision
- Infrared?
- Machine gun cameras from Metal Gear Solid

thx

There's a big thread on this but from what I've taken from it is Hikvision cameras are rather good (chinese). Go for PoE to make cabling easier.

yes they wernt pros as they would have taken it. your car is actually very easy to take. go to car auctions and see them all with same thing done. 1 minute its gone.

best to just make it so hard to take that its not worth the risk. so obstructions and time consuming objects.

I'm not so sure Dg, they have removed the OBD cover, presumably to program a new key. I doubt this was randoms trying it on?

They have also drilled the lock but been unable to get the window to come down (classic E60 flaw that mine has had patched), so have had to smash the window - but only the end to allow access to the OBD port. They had knowledge of my particular car's security flaws and the equipment to exploit it. I can only imagine they were disturbed somehow.

Since its pro would it not be cheaper/more effective to fit the car with a tracker?

If they are pros you're unlikely to get anything to go on from cctv. At least with a tracker you stand the chance of it being recovered(assuming it's not already out the country by the time you realise).

Only reason I got my a3 back was a aftermarket tracker.

Then again if they are pro there's a fair chance they'll find the tracker.

Not as far as I know. They apparently got fingerprints from my car but that was the last I heard. For all I know they might have caught someone.

I think for me the CCTV system is useful in another way. In some respects, if the car is gone I don't want it back - they can have it. Tracker is a bit risky as it stands an increased chance of coming back. I am interested in deterring the theft and catching those who try. If the CCTV can collect some information that helps with that then it's worth it. In some respects it also provides more peace of mind.

We have plans to build a driveway so these are being brought forward. We'll be adding a motion-sensing light and some way to block the entrance to the driveway to the plans.

Not a particular answer to the question but IMO they'll be back, and fairly soon as well before you have chance to increase your security.

This happened to me 10 years ago the same thing, first came the bust window and the alarm system ripped out on the drive (again must have been disturbed), a week later I woke up and it was gone.

Yeah, exactly that. I know a lot of people who got the car back and it felt tainted. That's quite natural if you have an emotional attachment to your car. A bit like if your partner is bonking someone else, it feels a bit strange when you next go inside :p

I've been checking the CCTV situation and I've looked at the following:

Cameras: 2x Hikvision DS-2CD2232-I5 3MP Full HD 1080P EXIR Bullet 6mm
NVR: Hikvision DS-7608NI-SE/P 8 Channel 5MP HD
HDD: 2x Western Digital WD30PURX Purple CCTV Hard Drive 3TB

With some cabling and whatnot that appears to be £800. Might choose the dome version of the camera, need to have a think about what's best. Not too sure of the pros and cons!

Pro's can block trackers. You need to watch a TV show that was on recently about car thefts in the uk.

If you really want to stop it, you have some options.

Fuel stop switch hidden in the car. Flick it off when you get out and the car won't start.
Remove a fuse or two when you get out, same as above.

I stopped a landrover being stolen 2 years ago, the guys now put a massive metal pillar in the middle of his drive. He raises it every night and locks it into place.
Removable steering wheel.

CCTV won't stop them taking it, just record them doing it. Security lighting also as a deterrent but again, doesn't really stop them.

Agreed, these are the best ways to stop drive-aways. My dad was always one for disassembling half the car electronics every night! That said, one of our neighbours had his car craned off his driveway... I'm also not sure if the E60 will have a small fit every time you disconnect something.

Have been looking at bollards for the driveway. Our plans will make it a bit too wide for anything much though - probably an 8 metre gap.

I think if the car is sat on the driveway close to the house, there's a security floodlight and obvious CCTV, it would hopefully go some way towards deterring a theft. As it is the car is 60ft away from the house, so noises will go unheard etc.

I hate to say it but that's scarily impressive.

They seem to be relying on some computer gizmo there. Could you remove the port they plug into without affecting daily operation?

Or rewire it so their device gets a nice 12v belt where it's not supposed to. Just remember for a garage visit :D.

You can't really easily remove the OBD port but you can get 'lock' devices that are designed to prevent easy access to it.

In most cars it's generally just behind a small piece of removable plastic.

Overall I tend to prefer, unless specific needs differ, the dome over the bullet cameras as they seem more robust and more impervious to scum bag attack.
Ensure that you need the 6mm lens, only two of my six cameras have 6mm lenses and the others have 4mm. In some situations maybe a 2.8mm lens is more applicable.

I have the same NVR as you have noted and it is great with my six cameras, maximum of 4 POE type directly powered from the NVR and 40 mb/s recording rate. But I use a Netgear POE switch.

I have a 4tb WD purple fitted.

Consider posting in the other larger CCTV thread for more peoples thoughts and opinions.
