Morning folks,

I was on my way into work this morning and I noticed something called a Census point being set up on the A34 in toward Stafford... now im not being retarded, I know what a census is.. but what need is there to put one on a Busy A road? there are signs saying 'if directed stop' I presume they just ask who you are and what you are doing?

Anyone encountered one?

Yep there was one of the main road into Yeovil last week. (not A303)

There was about 20 odd police officers blocking the only layby along the whole road doing what appeared to me nothing.

The timing they were doing it was completely stupid as well (ie at commuting peak when the road is extremely busy) - this was not helped by the placement of the cones which made it very difficult for lorries / farm traffic to get through.

i got stopped in one once... i think they were finding out where poeple had come from and where they were going because they were building a new by-pass

there was one outside my house yesterday trying to talk to the people who were going past at 8pm last sunday when a woman was killed in an accident

i think theyre the only two ive seen

Erm, that's the whole point - to see the traffic and journey patterns during rush hour ;)

If they tell people the census will be there and traffic slower during rush hour, people find an alternative route so it's not a typical morning's / evening's traffic.

Probably means im gonna be stopped at some point this week then.

It's a traffic census, it's raison d'etre is to take a census of the traffic. In order to be able to do that you need traffic. Traffic is found on busy A roads.

Anything else I can help with? :D

dont they check car details, insurance so on.

nope

literally, postcode you've come from, postcode you're going to, and how often do you make this journey

nothing else. coppers are there because they are the only ones with the power to stop traffic to make you do the census. Civillians cant actually do it, so they rope the police in to help.
