Hi,
I'm looking to get a new web server from Fasthosts (and yes, it has to be from Fasthosts, no option there). They give the choice of 2 operating systems:
- CentOS 5
- Ubunut 6.06 LTS

I'm wondering which to go for. I know my way around Ubuntu fairly well, but the version of CentOS seems to have newer versions of software (e.g. Apache 2.2 instead of 2). See here for full details:
http://www.fasthosts.co.uk/dedicatedservers/operating-systems/

I know that I can upgrade the packages as I wish, but which OS would you go for?

Cheers,
Matt

I'd go for Ubuntu personally, mainly cause I know my way round that better than CentOS.

I wouldn't worry too much about software versions, you can just download and compile from source most of the time anyway.

Ubuntu 6 is getting a bit long in the tooth now though, can't they give you Debian or something?

Nope, it's Ubuntu 6.06 or CentOS 5. No other choices (well, RedHat Enterprise, but that costs extra).

I'm not sure it really matters, as Fasthosts will look after issuing new packages etc, but didn't know if there was much between the two in overheads.

Depending on the hardware using, get Xubuntu, does the same job but without the overheads

What overheads? He's running a server, the only overheads Xubuntu skips out on his having XFCE instead of GNOME as a window manager. Servers generally speaking don't even have X installed ;)

You can get the server version of Ubuntu which has even less overheads than Xubuntu.

Between CentOS and Ubuntu for overheads... Well, er, I dunno really, it all depends on the software you have installed rather than the distro... So very little I guess. It's more about what you feel you can navigate and maintain better I think.

CentOS, absolutely no question about it. Ubuntu is good, but not as good as CentOS for what you are going to be doing.
