Central Heating Help Needed

If the pump is getting hot but not doing anything, perhaps there is no water supply to it? Is there any closed valves you can see?

I wonder if the system is pressured by mavity, is there a water tank in the loft? Check for any valves along the pipework in case they have been switched off.

Might sound a bit obvious but perhaps you have a boiler in a garage if you have one close to the house? Mine is outside the front door in a cupboard on its own with the electric meter.

P.S I am not qualified in any of the above.

We had the backboiler type for many years. May I suggest as a matter of great importance if the people there before never used that boiler that you get it inspected and serviced. Gas, flames, boilers and electrics could be your life at risk.

Get a different plumber in thats actually got a clue, get it serviced and I'm sure he can tell you where you are going wrong if its only firing for a short time. It could be that the switchover valve is stuck if it has one.

Another option is that the heatsink radiator (the one that is supposed to always allow hot water to flow) has a valve fitted and has been turned off. The boilers don't like this.

I am not qualified in Gas, I highly suggest you get someone to service that bad boy though! For your own safety and that of others if you don't live alone.

top pick is a copper cylinder, not a boiler..

2nd pick is a 3 way valve, to controle where the heat goes from the back boiler, either hot and heating or hot water only..

3rd is your pump, if its getting hot without the radiators getting hot, it could be jammed or you may have an air lock..

4th, the timer..

last pick, your boiler with its controles in front..

dont get that ******* plumber back, what an idiot..

if the boiler only fires up for a few seconds, it defo sounds like it has air in the system.. bleed your radiators, is their water in them? is the pump jammed? unscrew the little nut, then get another screwdriver in their and see if the pump turns, if it does, it'll be ok, if it doesnt you need to try and turn it with the screwdriver to free it up..

it wouldnt make much sense for valves to be turned off if everything else is on, like your hot and cold water..

I would think the pump is getting hot because of the water flowing through it - are the pipes either side hot? If not then the pump may not be working. You will know if the pump is on as you will be able to hear it (although quietly) when the heating is called for - you will also be able to feel the motor running if you hold your hand on the pump.

If its not working give it a bosh (technical term) with a rubber mallet as this could free up the mechanism (nothing too hard mind).

Further thought - The thermostat for your central heating - Have you located it?

When you turn the temperature up and down if its an analogue type dial, does it make an audible click? Could be that the thermostat is dicky also!

Thought thread like these where banned, OP get in a decent plumber, please dont try anything yourself.

you're joking right? you dont need a plumber to start bleeding radiators or turn switches on..

has he located the thermostat? ermmm yeah, he took a picture of it..

just because the pump is getting hot, does not mean its getting its heat from the boiler, the pump can produce a lot of heat from its own motor if jammed or the system is full of air and doesnt have the water there to cool it back down

Well people kept posting, plumbing, gas, electrical threads and people saying do this, do that, medical threads are not allowed for a reason.

Only takes one idiot to convince the OP he can solve the problem.

OP here - im not planning on fixing anything or endangering my life, I'm just locating the boiler and tracking down the issue, and I'll then call a professional. Just don't want to be conned in the process like last time!

My thanks for all your advice, it's been really helpful.

No, he hasn't taken a picture of the actual air temp thermostat at all. There is a boiler stat picture nothing to do with what I or most people would class as the central heating thermostat

Or perhaps you're referring to what you believe to be a thermostat which is actually a timer.

He STATES he's found the thermostat, but there is no picture.

Speak to friends and family and ask for a suggestion of someone to use mate :)

he said he had found his room thermostat and the boilers thermostat he took a picture of..

wow, im sick of arguing over this stuff now, unless you do this kind of stuff for a living, stop trying to prove a point with someone who does..

What I'm telling you is you highlighted my question with your response and told me he had taken a picture of it. If you are supposed to do this stuff for a living I'd be worried. It appears you might be like his plumber given you cant identify a room stat that doesn't exist in a non existant photograph.

the thermostat on the boiler controles central heating and hot water, he'll have another termostat on his cylinder and another room stat which he already said he had found before you stuck your comment up

This, Maybe Mickie was the original plumber.

Palleon you got an ancient set up, where did you find this plumber?

tbh looks like you are trying to do this on the cheap, get the whole thing replaced, if you just bought the house then I would demand to see the estate agent, so when you need it winter it breaks, biggest problem with heating!

Looks like you have some compression joints going into solider joints and the flux has been used wildly lol

Wow, sorry to be causing an argument on the forums. I did find the thermostat, but I did not take a picture. (It was a dial, 0-30, goes "click" when you turn it enough) :)

I am "hoping" to do it cheap, as I have no money lol. But, not "trying" to do it cheap. If its broke and needs replacing, then I will just have to get saving!

Once again, thank you all for your help.
