I am "hoping" to do it cheap, as I have no money lol. But, not "trying" to do it cheap. If its broke and needs replacing, then I will just have to get saving!

If it works, it works. Shelling out on a new boiler may take many years to realise savings from increased efficiency so it depends how long you plan to stay in your new place.

I would say regardless of whether you get it working yourself getting the fire/boiler serviced is a must. With them not being sealed units and sharing air with the room they could poison you with carbon monoxide if there is a fault. Considering the last owners didn't even know it was there I doubt they ever had it inspected!

Also get yourself a carbon monoxide detector.

OP - have you established if water is flowing through the pump yet?

It is probably time to get the experts in - just try and ensure they come recommended from someone you know if possible.

Hey sorry to hear you're having a few problems. one thing to try is giving The Building Centre a call, thy are a building firm specialising in ALL building products problems etc and can help you no doubt. their number is 020 7692 4000 give them a ring and ask for the information department whoever answers will help

You certainly need to get someone to come and inspect the back boiler!

As Fourstar said, given that the previous owners didn't know about it, i doubt it's been serviced for a long time and is therefore a potential risk to your life.

You seem to have all the parts required for a heating system, albeit pretty old parts, so I would suggest that you do some research into how central heating and hot water systems work so that you know what is supposed to be happening. The concepts are pretty straight forward, and there is a lot of information out there but it takes some wading through to find it. This site http://www.miketheboilerman.com/how.htm seems to give a quick synopsis of what you need to know so that you can understand your system, but you will need to google for some decent images of the different types of systems. (There are some great sites out there but I'm having Googlefail today and can't find anything!)

Have a look for water tanks in the loft. You may have two tanks up there, one supplying water to your hot water cylinder for hot water from the taps, and the other supplying water to your boiler to heat the radiators and the hot water cylinder. I really think it would benefit you to get your head around your system and how it SHOULD work so you have a chance of fault finding it.

And again, please get someone in to service the boiler asap, then you can also ask them about your whole heating system with some knowledge to understand what you are being told

I am arranging for someone to come in and service the boiler. Fingers crossed!

As for the water tank, yes, I have 2 tanks in the loft - a big one where the hot water comes from and a smaller one.. that presumably must be for the heating. I can not hear anything from it when you turn the system on, and I cant hear any water flowing anywhere. I'll have a look at the link you sent.

the part on ebay is what controles the boilers temp.. its the same thing he has took a pic of, that white nob is his boiler thermostat.

his room thermostat controles central heating and his cylinder thermostat controles his hot water..

hope ive cleared up what ive been trying to point out..

if you run your hot water for a while the bigger tank should start to fill up as it emptys its self.. the smaller one never fills once all the radiators are full of water.. like ive said, make sure they're full of water..

The plumber you got in sounds like a complete waste of space. £30 to change a pump... are you sure he even changed it because they cost something like £80-90 and then he'd surely charge labour on top...
